    • A support (3) for an embolic protection filter comprises a support element in the form of one or more wires (20) of superelastic material, such as Nitinol. A core of radiopaque material is embedded within at least portion of at least one of the support wires (20). The core may be in the form of a wire (21) of a suitable radiopaque material, such as gold, or platinum, or mercury and extends along the length of a support wire. The radiopaque wire (21) is located substantially along the neutral axis of bending of the support wire (20). The radiopaque wire (21) provides visualisation for a clinician during transport of the filter (1) through a vasculature and deployment of the filter (1) in the vasculature.

    • A medical catheter (1) for the transvascular deployment of a collapsible medical device such as a filter (2) has a tubular body formed by an inner tubular core (11) surrounded by an outer thin-walled tube (10) which is fixed to the core (11). The outer thin-walled tube (10) extends outwardly beyond a distal end (12) of the core (11) to form a fixed thin-walled medical device embracing pod (3). The filter (2) is carried on a guidewire (6) which is slidably engagable within a central lumen of the core (11) and the filter (2) can be collapsed against the guidewire (6) for loading within the pod (3). With the filter (2) thus loaded within the pod (3) the distal end of the catheter (1) can be manoeuvred through a patient's vascular system to a desired deployment site where the filter (2) is discharged from the pod (3) allowing the filter (2) to expand within the blood vessel for use filtering blood flowing through the blood vessel.

    • A surgical shunt (1) has a tubular body (2) with internal bore (3). A port (9) is provided intermediate the ends (4, 5) of the body (2) for delivery of a medical device such as a collapsible embolic protection filter (16) carried by a guidewire (17). The filter (16) is deployed downstream of the shunt (1) to entrap embolic material released during a surgical procedure. The length of the external proximal portion of a mounting system is greater than the sum of the length of the entry port (9) and a distal section of the shunt bore (3). The shunt can be completely removed while maintaining the filter (16) in place to protect against embolic material released during shunt removal.
