摘要： Nanofilm-encapsulated sulfide glass solid electrolyte structures and methods for making the encapsulated glass structures involve a lithium ion conducting sulfide glass sheet encapsulated on its opposing major surfaces by a continuous and conformal nanofilm made by atomic layer depositon (ALD). During manufacture, the reactive surfaces of the sulfide glass sheet are protected from deleterious reaction with ambient moisture, and the nanofilm can be configured to provide additional performance advantages, including enhanced mechanical strength and improved chemical resistance.

In certain embodiments the device comprises a donor electrode that is a donor of a lithium ion; a protective architecture that is ionically conductive to the lithium ion, configured for application to a skin surface and positioned to isolate said donor electrode from the skin surface; and a counter electrode assembly configured for application to a skin surface, where said counter electrode assembly comprises a counter electrode operably coupled to said donor electrode.

摘要： A method employing a bonding layer is used to form active metal electrodes having barrier layers. Active metals such as lithium are highly reactive in ambient conditions. The method involves fabricating a lithium electrode or other active metal electrode without depositing the barrier layer on a layer of metal. Rather a smooth barrier layer is formed on a smooth substrate such as a web carrier or polymeric electrolyte. A bonding or alloying layer is formed on top of the barrier layer. Lithium or other active material is then attached to the bonding layer to form the active metal electrode. A current collector may also be attached to the lithium or active metal during the process.

摘要： The present invention provides a method of protecting against damage from overcharge in a rechargeable battery. The method is characterized as including the steps of providing a lithium sulfur battery which has a negative electrode and a sulfur positive electrode. The sulfur positive electrode includes active sulfur, an electronic conductor mixed with the active sulfur so that electrons can move between the active sulfur and an electronic conductor, and an ionic conductor mixed with the active sulfur so that ions can move between the ionic conductor and the active sulfur. The battery made from these materials is subjected to overcharge that is not substantially higher than the normal voltage of the cell, wherein the sulfur positive electrode has between about 10 to 100 % active sulfur available for the electrochemical reaction which prevents the rechargeable battery from damage due to overcharge.

摘要： Aqueous Li/Air secondary battery cells are configurable to achieve high energy density and prolonged cycle life. The cells include a protected a lithium metal or alloy anode and an aqueous catholyte in a cathode compartment. The aqueous catholyte comprises an evaporative-loss resistant and/or polyprotic active compound or active agent that partakes in the discharge reaction and effectuates cathode capacity for discharge in the acidic region. This leads to improved performance including one or more of increased specific energy, improved stability on open circuit, and prolonged cycle life, as well as various methods, including a method of operating an aqueous Li/Air cell to simultaneously achieve improved energy density and prolonged cycle life.

摘要： Electrochemical power cells having an open-cell architecture for electrically powering an implantable medical device system include a first and a second electrode assembly, wherein at least one is a biocompatible hermetically sealed anode assembly (e.g., that of a lithium anode assembly). The power cell can be a biological lithium semi-fuel cell in which a bodily constituent partakes in the cell discharge reaction at the cathode as an active reagent. The active cathode reagent can be oxygen supplied from the body. In a particularly suitable application, the biological lithium semi-fuel cell provides electrical power to a cardiac pacemaker device, such as for a novel cardiac pacemaker system.
