    • This invention is a bone anchor inserter (Fig. 1) for insertion of a bone anchor (100) into a bore in a bone, the inserter (Fig. 1) comprising a handle (10) having a grip portion (12), an actuator member (16) mounted on the handle, a sleeve (22) fixed in the handle (10) and extending therefrom, and a shaft (24) fixed at one end to the actuator member (16) and slidably movable in the sleeve (22). The sleeve (22) is provided with an opening (40) in a sidewall thereof proximate, but spaced from, a free end (34) of the sleeve (22). The opening (40) facilitates loading a bone anchor (100) therethrough and into the sleeve (22) between a free end (34) of the sleeve and a distal end of the shaft (24). The invention further contemplates a method for loading a bone anchor inserter (Fig. 1), a method for holding and delivering a bone anchor (100), and a method for inserting a bone anchor (100) in a bore in a bone.

    • This invention is an anchor (7a, 7b, 7c) for attaching an object to a bone-like structure, and a method for deploying the same. The anchor includes a body and a plurality of barbs (44). The barbs are located in axially aligned, circumferentially spaced relation to each other about the body. Each barb is elastically deformable, and has a normal configuration which extends rearwardly and radially outwardly from the body to an outer end which is located outside of a longitudinal projection of the largest geometric cross section of the body, as taken transverse to its longitudinal axis. A bore (26) extends transversely through the front portion of the body and is adapted to receive a length of cord-like material, whereby the anchor may be pulled along a bone tunnel. An opening (30) extends transversely through the rear portion of the body and is adapted for connecting the object to the anchor. The method includes the steps of threading a cord-like material through the bore; attaching the object to the rear portion of the body, threading the cord-like material through a preformed bone tunnel; pulling the anchor into, and/or through, the preformed bone tunnel to a location slightly beyond its desired anchoring location; and exerting a rearward pulling force on the object so as to set the outer ends of the barbs into the bone-like structure.

    • An anchor (12) for attaching an object within a tunnel (11) extending through a workpiece such as a bone (6) or a bone-like structure, and a method for using the same. The anchor includes a body (14), and a plurality of barbs (151) located in circumferentially spaced relation about the body (14). The barbs (151) are formed of a material which may be elastically deformed from a normal configuration wherein the outer ends of the barbs extend radially outwardly of the body (14) toward a configuration wherein the barbs are located generally parallel to the longitudinal axis of the body (14). A diametrical opening (26) in the front portion of the anchor is provided for engagement by a length of cord-like material such that the anchor may be pulled into a bone tunnel (11), and an opening in the rear portion of the anchor is provided for attaching either a ligament (8), tendon or the like to the anchor (12), or for grasping a bone plug or similar rigid object attached to a free end of the ligament (8), tendon, or the like.
