    • 1410129 Trimming plastics containers J D McCALL 3 Feb 1973 5472/73 Heading B5A Apparatus for trimming plastics containers comprises rotatable means to carry the trimming tool, a housing therefor in which the rotatable means is journalled, means to reciprocate the housing toward and away from the container at a first speed until the tool engages the container and then more slowly for machining the container, means to grip the container, and means responsive to the movement of the housing to actuate the gripping means to grip the container before the tool engages it and to release it after disengagement of the tool therefrom. The apparatus comprises a housing 602 having a drive shaft 604 journalled therein and receiving splines 612 of a spindle shaft 614 supported in bearings 616 in a vertically reciprocable and upwardly biased inner housing 618. A shaft 524 is horizontally reciprocated by a cam (not shown) acting through cam follower roller 522 and rack 526 on shaft 524 acts via pinion 528 on rack 530 on housing 618 to lower tool 624 therewith. A platen'cam carrier 630 is bolted on housing 618 and carries cams 634. Neck gripping mechanism 650 comprises a yoke 652 on which are pivoted arms 656 having rollers 662 to follow cams 634. Arms 656 have slots 668 to receive rods 670 pivoted in tool platen carriers 672. Each carrier 672 is slidable on shafts 674 on yoke 652 carries a neck clamp 680 and is biased away from the neck clamping position by springs 686. Chips, &c. from the trimming operation may be removed by a blower connected at inlet 690 and prevented from entering the container by air supplied through conduit CD4 in shafts 604, 614 and tool 624 into the container. In operation, shaft 614 is constantly driven to rotate tool 624 through pulley 606. Tool 624 is lowered in response to rotation of cam 480, Fig. 5, which provides 112 degrees rotation for a rapid lowering of the tool 624, 136 degrees rotation for a short, slow lowering for cutting, a 4 degrees dwell period and 108 degrees rotation for rapid return. The cam has a series of notches 484 which each cause a short lifting of tool 624 during cutting to break cut lengths into short chips.

    • 1419972 Stretching apparatus J D McCALL 23 Nov 1972 54228/72 Heading B5B Thermoplastic film is uniaxially stretched by pulling the film away from the nip of restraining rolls whilst heating the film to soften it. The major part of the heating zone is either within the nip of the restraining rolls or within the area from the nip to a plane extending transversely to the film and tangential to the nip rolls. The heating is uniform across the film throughout the entire heating zone. When the film 11 is heated at the nip, nip roller 16 may be internally heated by means of fluid passing through from inlet 26 to outlet 28 (not shown). When the film is heated after the nip the heater may take the form of a bar 48 placed close to the nip. This bar is preferably a wedge shape, the point 52 being thrust almost into the nip, and having a flat bottom surface 50 close to the film. By inclining the bar 48 at a slight angle α the nip may be shielded from convection currents. When a heating bar is used the roll 16 may be cooled by fluid passing internally through it. Preferably roll 16 has a non-resilient surface and roll 18 a resilient one. Pulling rolls 40 and 42 may also be non- resilient and resilient respectively and 40 may also be cooled. The process is illustrated for polyvinyl alcohol and is stated to give a uniform stretching.

    • 1377428 Crystal pulling apparatus J D Mc CALL 9 Feb 1972 6010/72 Heading B1S [Also in Division Cl] A synthetic corundum crystal containing a titanium asteriating compound substantially distributed throughout is prepared by dipping a seed crystal into a melt of alumina containing 1-3% titania contained in a crucible 16 surrounded by an induction coil 27 and insulating member 20 and having a lid opening of slightly greater diameter than the maximum diameter of the crystal to be pulled to allow withdrawal of the crystal and upward thermal radiation from a localized central portion of the melt surface and having an insulating member 29 arranged above the crucible lid and having a central opening greater than that in the crucible lid. The edges of the crucible lid opening forming an inverted greater than that in the crucible lid. The edges of the insulating member forming a cone of angle°=40‹ to 65‹ thereby defining the region of unrestricted thermal radiation. The space between members 20 and 17 may be filled with granular insulating material and the space between members 22 and 20 may be filled with refractory chips. The crucible may be constructed of tungsten or iridium and the structural members of the apparatus may be composed of alumina, silica or zirconium.

    • 1335049 Polyesters J D McCALL (Velsicol Chemical Corp) 7 Nov 1970 53055/70 Headings C3P and C3R A linear polyester is produced by reacting together (A) 10-40 mole per cent of cis-3- methyl - 4 - cyclohexene - cis,cis - 1,2 - dicarboxylic anhydride of melting point 63-65‹ C., (B) 10-40 mole per cent of maleic or fumaric acid or maleic anhydride and (C) 50-70 mole per cent of a glycol, e.g., ethylene glycol, di-, tri-, tetra- and higher ethylene glycols, 1,2-propylene glycol, trimethylene glycol, polypropylene glycol, dipropylene glycol and 2,2-dimethyl-1,3- propane diol. From 1 to 60 mole per cent of compound B may be replaced by an equivalent amount of an ester-forming derivative of an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic dicarboxylic acid or anhydride, e.g., chlorendic, phthalic, carbic, hydrogenated carbic, succinic, adipic and tetrachloro- or -bromo benzene dicarboxylic acids, the halogenated dicarboxylic acids being used if fire retardant polymers are required. Coating compositions, e.g. for wood, metal, paper, plastics, pressed wood products and concrete blocks, may comprise 40-80% by weight of the polyester and 20-60% by weight of a monomeric ethylene derivative copolymerizable by free radical addition polymerization with the unsaturation in the polyester, e.g., styrene, vinyl toluene, chlorostyrene, vinyl acetate, propionate or benzoate, methyl or ethyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, N - (1,1 - dimethyl - 3 - oxobutyl)-acrylamide, vinyl methyl ketone, divinyl sulphone, succinic acid, divinyl ester, N- vinyl pyrrolidone, N-vinyl caprolactam, isobutyl vinyl ether and butane diol-1,4-divinyl ether.
