    • A wavelength sensing lighting system (10) may include a light source (40), a sensor and a controller (61 ). One or more light sources (40) and sensors may be included in an array (39). The light source (40) may emit an illuminating light (44) and the sensor may sense an environmental light (48). The illuminating light (44) may include data light (45). The lighting system (10) may include a plurality of nodes connected in a network (69). The nodes may communicate by emitting and receiving the data light (45), which may be analyzed by the controller (61 ). The light source (40) and the sensor may be provided by a light emitting semiconductor device (40) that is capable of emitting illuminating light (44) and receiving environmental light (48). A conversion material (30) may convert the wavelength of a source light (42) into a converted light (46). The conversion material (30) may increase the wavelength range of light emittable and detectable by the lighting system (10).

    • The light bulb (100) is comprised of a plurality of individual light sources, (130) such as light emitting diodes (LED's), capable of emitting white light or blue light or light of any other desired color. These light emitting elements are enclosed in an outer bulb housing (102) that may include an optical tuning element and provided with the proper base for connection to a power source, e.g. a socket. The light bulb is characterized by a housing (102) having a round top and a somewhat funnel-shaped side wall (104) connected to the base. The side wall (104) is constructed with the desired angle of taper in order to obtain the desired angle of dispersion of the light. The interior of the tapered portion (104) is provided with a mirrored surface (122) so as to reflect light in the interior of the bulb and thereby obtain a wide angle of dispersion. An inner peripheral row of LED's (130) or other light sources is also provided so that additional backlight is reflected back into the interior of the bulb housing, reflect off of the mirrored surface (122) and, thereafter, allowed to escape through the round top with a wide angle of dispersion. In addition, the optical tuning element may include reflective portions, opaque portions, and transparent portions to further provide functionality and means for adjusting the dispersion of the light emitted from the light bulb (100).

    • The present system for driving an electronic light generating element, includes: (i) input terminals, (ii) an input circuit coupled to the input terminals and operable to convert a sinusoidal signal to a signal independent of negative current attributes, (iii) a switch control circuit coupled to the input circuit and operable to generate a switching signal having pulses, and (iv) a switching element coupled to the input circuit and the switch control circuit. The switching element is operable to generate an output signal formed as a series of bursts having peak amplitudes above a maximum forward current rating for a duty cycle less than a maximum operating duty cycle over which an electronic light generating element may be catastrophically damaged in response to the signal independent of negative current attributes and switching being applied to the switching element. The output signal is applied to the electronic light generating element to produce light.
