    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately analyze a physiological specimen, by reducing not only the load on an analysis engineer and inspector of the physiological specimen, but also reducing the complicatedness beginning from the sampling of the physiological specimen to its actual inspection. SOLUTION: An aqueous buffer solution, which contains a first indicating substance being the component, contained in a physiological specimen and indicating the first component passing through a corpuscle membrane and a second indicating substance being the component contained in the physiological specimen and indicating a second component that does not pass through the corpuscle membrane, is prepared as an aqueous buffer solution, of which the osmotic pressure is almost equal to that of blood. An unknown amount of the sampled physiological specimen is added to a fixed amount of the aqueous buffer solution, the corpuscle component in the physiological specimen is removed, the mixture solution, from which the corpuscle component is removed, is analyzed, and the first and second diluting magnifications of the physiological specimen, based on the first indication substance are calculated, respectively. The amount of the component, contained in the physiological specimen and passing through the corpuscle membrane, is calculated on the basis of the first diluting magnification and the amount of the component contained in the physiological specimen and that does not pass through the corpuscle membrane is calculated, on the basis of the second diluting magnification. • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a separation implement for simplifying a sampling- operation of a living-body sample so as to reduce inspection costs. SOLUTION: The separation implement is provided with a living-body-sample sampling means 2 for housing the sampled living-body sample, a filtration means 21 for passing a prescribed component in the sampled living-body sample, a separation-component housing means 3 for being inserted into and passed through the sampling means 2 and for housing the prescribed component passing the filtration means 21, and a backflow preventive means 5 for preventing the prescribed component housed in the housing means 3 from flowing backwards to the side of the sampling means 2 via the filtration means 21. The living-body sample is sampled by the sampling means 2, the housing means 3 is inserted into, and passed through, the sampling means 2, the prescribed component in the living-body sample passes the filtration means 21, the preventive means 5 blocks up a flow channel between the housing means 3 and the sampling means 2 so as to prevent the prescribed component from flowing backwards, and the prescribed component in the living-body sample is separated so as to be housed in the housing means 3. • A method and apparatus are disclosed for the positive identification of an individual of use for the secure purchasing of goods or services over a visual medium such as television, the Internet and EFTPOS systems. The apparatus is a point-of-sale terminal (6) which includes a keyboard (7), a screen (8), a fingerprint reader (9), a smart card reader assembly (10) and a printhead assembly incorporated within the card reader assembly (10). The operating software of the terminal (6) includes code to decrypt encrypted information read from the smart card (4). An individual wishing to undertake a secure financial transaction first obtains a smart card (4) which incorporates encrypted biometric data and financial data of that individual. At the point of intended purchase, the card (4) is placed in the reader assembly (10) of the terminal (6). The account details and encrypted biometric data are read by the terminal (6). The appropriate fingerprint of the individual is then taken at the fingerprint reader (9) of the terminal (6) from which the encryption key is determined. The encrypted fingerprint data read from the card (4) is then decrypted using the encryption key just determined and the thus-decoded fingerprint data from the card (4) is compared with the fingerprint data obtained at the terminal (6). If the thus-read fingerprint data is identical with that decoded from the card (4), identification is deemed positive and the financial transaction proceeds.

    • A control system for a pre-programmed animated show including animated figures. The program is prerecorded on a conventional medium (10), the audio portion of the show being recorded on a separate track from the control information but in synchronism therewith. The control information is recorded in blocks or frames of bits of predetermined size, with each bit position being dedicated to a particular one of the control functions of the show, at least one of which is operated by a pneumatic cylinder (100). Frames of bits are readed from the tape (10) asynchronously, and each group of dedicated bits is used to control its respective control function. Close regulation of the movement of the pneumatic cylinder (100) is achieved by operating the cylinder (100) in a two-mode fashion. When the actual position of the cylinder piston (104) is relatively far from the desired position, the control system for the cylinder (100) is driven hard toward the desired position. When the actual position of the cylinder (100) comes within a predefined range of the desired position, a second mode of operation is entered in which the drive to the cylinder (100) is intermittently removed to achieved momentary "braking". An arcuate eye movement mechanism (608) and a finger movement mechanism (710) are provided.
