    • A fastening device is provided for fastening two parts together. The two parts for fastening together can be furniture parts. The fastening device may have two rotatable engagement slots for engaging with two dowels which are fixed to the parts being fastened together. The engagement slots have cam profiles such that when they are rotated by a user, the dowels, and thus the parts, are pulled together, and thereby fastened. The fastening device may have a gear mechanism that multiplies torque input to the fastening device by the user so as to provide greater rotational torque for fastening at the engagement slots. The invention also provides a tightening tool that may be used to provide an input torque to the fastening device. The tightening tool remains rigid below a threshold torque, but reversibly buckles when the threshold torque is exceeded. The invention also provides a ratchet for switching between a tightening mode and a loosening mode of the tightening tool.

    • A fastening device 300 for fastening a first body having a first fixing element to a second body comprises a rotatable input shaft 310. A primary rotatable engagement body 320 has a primary engagement slot 321 formed in a wall. A gear mechanism is configured to transfer rotation from the rotatable input shaft 310 to the primary rotatable engagement body 320 such that the rotation rate of the primary rotatable engagement body 320 is lower than that of the rotatable input shaft 310. The primary engagement slot 321 is shaped so as to pull the first fixing element towards the second body as the primary engagement slot 321 rotates thereby fastening the first body to the second body. First and second bodies may each have a fixing element. Also disclosed is a tightening tool that may be used to provide an input torque to the fastening device. The tightening tool remains rigid below a threshold torque, but reversibly buckles when the threshold torque is exceeded. A ratchet may be provided for switching between a tightening mode and a loosening mode of the tightening tool.
