摘要： A method of preparing preforms for optical fibers is provided. The method includes preparation of a first sol solution of a silicon alkoxide hydrolyzed with an acid and ultrafine particle silica, placement of the first sol solution into a container, and gelation of the first sol solution while the container is being rotated to yield a wet gel having a center hole. A second sol solution having a different composition than the first sol solution is prepared and used to fill the center hole in the wet gel. The second sol solution is then gelled to a wet gel composite and the composite is dried and sintered to yield the preform.

摘要： A step motor driving control mechanism for use in an electronic timepiece for reducing the current consumption thereof is provided. Load detection circuitry detects the load condition of the step motor and selectively produces a load condition signal representative of a predetermined load condition thereof. Driving and control circuitry is provided for receiving a low frequency timekeeping signal produced by a divider circuit and a load detection signal when same is selectively produced by the load detection circuitry. In response to the presence or absence of a load detection signal applied thereto, the drive and control circuitry is adapted to vary the duration of the pulse width of a drive signal applied to the step motor to effect a driving of same.

摘要： A multi-color liquid crystal display includes liquid crystal micro-shutters which open and close filters arranged as dots in a mosaic or stripe pattern. Fine and clear color image display and color graphic display are realized in the device wherein the filters are within the LCD panel, being formed on one substrate and covered by the driving electrode. The circuitry for driving the display includes a driving circuit for receiving three primary color signals, and a color selection circuit for selecting sequentially for input to the driving circuit each one of the three primary color signals. The color selection circuit selects the three primary colors only once per horizontal scan of the picture elements. The circuitry for driving the display also includes an element selecting circuit for selecting the picture elements in sequence. The driving circuit applies selected color signals from the color selection circuit to driving electrodes of a corresponding color in the selected picture element. The element selecting circuit has timing signal inputs for timing signals to time the selection of picture elements in sequence for driving. The element selecting circuit may select the elements at different times so that successive selected elements of different colors are selected at successive times. The times may be selected, and the periods of selection may have a duration, so that successive elements are selected at times that partially overlap one another.

摘要： In an improved metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) device a polycrystalline semiconductor region is buried in a monocrystalline semiconductor substrate at the isolation region between elements of the device. A deep and narrow groove of about 1 mu m is formed by reactive ion etching in which the polycrystalline silicon is deposited by chemical vapor deposition. Surface polycrystalline semiconductor is removed by etching resulting in only the polycrystalline semiconductor buried in the substrate which is implanted with ions. Alternatively, polycrystalline semiconductor is deposited only in the bottom portion of the groove, ion implanted and an insulator film is formed in the remaining portion of the groove for fully isolating the polycrystalline region. Semiconductor devices prepared in accordance with the invention have flattened surfaces, reduced crystal defects and permit further miniaturization of the MOS devices.

摘要： In the matrix, a positive type liquid crystal of the twisted nematic type is driven by a thin film transistor arranged on a transparent substrate. The polarity of the video signal, originally generated for a cathode ray tube, is inverted within a driving circuit and the inverted negative video signal is used to drive the positive type liquid crystal display. In the range of voltages of the video signal which correspond to the white level, the active matrix panel is driven by stretching the voltage of the video signal such that comparable voltage-contrast characteristics are achieved with the liquid crystal display as with the cathode ray tube. Leakage current of the thin film transistor during off-periods is reduced by setting a gate voltage during the off-period which is within the range of voltage level of the power source.

摘要： A high-speed responsive liquid crystal optical device with improved light transmissivity is provided. The device includes a liquid crystal panel including an optically active liquid crystal material having dielectric anisotropy which becomes zero at a crossing frequency ("fc") of 100 KHz or below. The dielectric anisotropy of the liquid crystal is positive at frequencies lower than fc ("fl") and negative at frequencies higher than fc ("fh"). Crossed polarizers are disposed on each side of the liquid crystal panel. A liquid crystal driving circuit selectively applies a signal of a frequency fh to open the device and a signal of a frequency fl to close the device. The optical device is particularly well suited for use as a light valve in a printer device. Response time within 1 m sec. permits a printing speed of 10 prints of A4 size to be produced per minute with a resolving power of about 10 dots per 1 m/m. This amounts to a printing speed of approximately 500 lines in one second with each line being written into m sec. or less. The optically active nematic liquid crystal is a composition comprising a optically inactive nematic liquid crystal and an optically active liquid crystal material added thereto.
