    • In one arrangement, a storage system for storing items includes an enclosure enclosing a hypoxic environment, and a pallet shuttle system comprising rows of racks disposed within the hypoxic environment. The pallet shuttle system also includes at least one transfer car and at least one shuttle for carrying storage modules into and out of the racks. The system further includes a loading station outside the hypoxic environment, and an enclosure door to the hypoxic environment. The enclosure door is operable to admit the transfer car of the pallet shuttle system into and out of the hypoxic environment, and to close the hypoxic environment upon passage of the transfer car through the door. Optionally, the system includes paneling separating the enclosure into at least two separately climate-controlled zones such that at least one of the racks is in each of the at least two separately climate-controlled zones.

    • Methods and systems are disclosed that relate to encrypting data of a data item for storing in a data storage system comprising a plurality of disks having stripes. A blinding factor is constructed based on a stripe blind that is assigned to a stripe with which the data item is associated and a unique identifier associated with the data item. A first logic operation is performed between the blinding factor and an encryption key to create a blinded encryption key for the data item. The data item is decrypted by identifying the stripe blind with the unique identifier and recreating the data item's blinding factor based on the stripe blind and the unique identifier. A second logic operation, which is selected based on the first logic operation, is performed between the blinding factor and the blinded encryption key to recreate the encryption key.

    • A computer performs a backup operation copying user files and system files to a separate backup system for persistent storage. The system files include restore-point files from a system area of a source system storage device, the restore-point files created by the computer's operating system and being copies of constituent files of the operating system at a point in time. In a subsequent restoration operation, the computer is operated in a limited-functionality recovery mode including (a) executing a recovery program from a recovery storage device to restore the restore-point files from the recovery storage device to a system area of a target system storage device, and (b) executing a system restore function with selected restored restore-point files to restore the operating system. Subsequently, the computer is operated in a full-functionality operating mode including (a) executing the restored operating system, and (b) executing the recovery program to restore the user files from the recovery storage device to the computer.

    • Systems and methods for managing digital assets in a distributed computing environment are described. Meta-data for the digital assets is stored separately from the digital assets. Metadata for some of the digital assets is copied and stored at a central location. Meta-data for the digital assets is generated by clients of the system. A method of displaying digital asset of a distributed computing system according to an organization specified by the end-user of a client includes: receiving an organization semantic having at least one depth level from an end-user of the client, the organization semantic specifying at least one attribute of a digital asset identification tag; and displaying, to the end-user of the client, on a virtual computing element the digital assets of the distributed computing system that substantially match the organization semantic defined by the end-user, without reference to a pre-existing organizational hierarchy of the distributed computing environment.
