摘要： In a cigar-banding machine the gumming or moistening device consists of a strip with continuous, step-by-step operation which passes over a brush mounted in a reservoir, the moistened strip being brought into contact with the end of the cigar band, a throw-out mechanism being provided which is operated in the absence of a band. The liquid container 264 is given a horizontal reciprocatory movement by means of a lever 276, and a lifting movement by means of a lever 301. The continuous strip 263 is led from a supply reel across the top of the container where it is moistened by a brush 265, and is then returned along a fixed guide 284, and runs to a waste receptacle. The strip is fed by being gripped during the forward movement of the container, the gripping means comprising a hardened plate 290 and a bevelled edge 289 mounted on a pivoted member 288, a tension weight 283 riding in slots 282 resting on the top of the strip. The member 288 is operated by a rod 293 the upper end of which engages in an adjustable socket in the lever 288. By adjusting the socket, the period during which the edge 289 is operative can be varied, thus varying the feed of the strip. On the upward swing of the container the looped end of the strip is brought into contact with the end of the band 71 which is supported by the end 69 of a spring-influenced rocker arm 312, the other end of which is engaged by an angular member 314 on the pivoted clamping member 288; by these means the arm 312 is raised during the feeding movement of the strip, as shown, and is lowered to operative position against a stop 316. In the event of a band not being present the vacuum in the separator 121 is broken and a stop is operated to prevent the lowering of the arm 312, thus preventing the gumming of the support 69.
