    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for reducing oxidant by the operation and/or treatment of an aqueous acrylonitrile process stream. SOLUTION: A method for producing an unsaturated mononitrile selected from the group consisting of acrylonitrile and methacrylonitrile is provided, comprising a step of producing a reactor effluent containing the corresponding unsaturated mononitrile, a step of transferring the effluent into a quench column, a step of transferring the resultant effluent into an absorption column, a step of transferring the resultant bottom stream containing the unsaturated mononitrile into a section where the unsaturated mononitrile is retrieved and refined, and a step of improving the efficiency of this method by recirculating at least one aqueous process stream; wherein the improved point comprises a step of treating at least one aqueous stream prior to recirculating it to the process stream to lower its pH, thereby reducing the amount of trace impurities present in the aqueous recycled stream.     • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide processes for recovery and refining of valuable nitrogen-containing organic compounds formed by catalytic oxidation of at least one feed compound selected from the group consisting of propane, propylene, isobutane and isobutylene in the presence of ammonia to produce a gas.
      SOLUTION: The processes include a step of quenching the gaseous reactor effluent with an aqueous quench liquid; a step of forming an aqueous solution comprising the corresponding unsaturated mononitrile, hydrogen cyanide and other organic co-products; and a step of using an integrated sequence of distillations and phase separations to recover for recycle of a useful aqueous liquid and obtain the desired nitrogen-containing products. Aqueous solutions are fractionated in an integrated system of multi-stage columns while an effective polymerization inhibiting amount of at least one member of a preselected class of p-phenylenediamine compounds is maintained therein.
