    • BAND SAW APPARATUS AND METHOD by GERALD R. HARRIS Band saw apparatus (21) is disclosed. It includes: a drive assembly (22, 27, 28) formed for support and guided movement of a saw blade (29) for cutting of a workpiece (81); an endless band saw blade (29) mounted to the drive assembly; and, reciprocation apparatus (33, 34, 41) formed for reciprocation of the blade (29) toward and away away from the workpiece (81) to enable see-sawing of the blade (29) and variation of the force per unit area of the cutting edge (66) of the blade (29) on the workpiece (81) while maintaining the same total force on the blade (29). To enhance efficiency of cutting, the blade drive assembly is mounted to the remainder of the saw (21) to be substantially free to rebound or move away from the workpiece (813 during reciprocation to avoid digging in or shearing off of the blade teeth and to permit close spacing of the blade guides (33, 34) next to the workpiece (81). The saw (21) includes a control circuit (111, 154) for controlling the rate of movement of the saw arm (22) away from (36) and toward (37) the workpiece (81) to enable timing of saw arm (22) rebound to blade (29) displacement. The blade guides (33, 34) are reciprocated by the fluid piston-cylinder assemblies (41) in synchronism or out-of-phase to vary the amplitude, frequency, speed and dwell during displacement independently of blade (29) speed and at two locations along a length of the blade (29) so as to produce see-sawing oscillation as well as simple reciprocation. The blade guide assemblies (33, 34) are provided with displacement means (41) to permit guide assembly (33, 34) adjustment during cutting to maintain the guide assemblies (33, 34) in close proximity to the workpiece (81). Alternative blade displacement assembly constructions and a method for cutting workpieces employing the apparatus also are disclosed. The method includes variation of the feed rate of the saw blade (29) down through the workpiece (81) as a function of the width of the workpiece (81).

    • Band saw apparatus is disclosed which includes cutting enhancement apparatus formed for tilting of the cutting stretch of the band saw blade to vary the force per unit area of the cutting edge of the blade on the workpiece. The cutting enhancement apparatus which tilts the blade at both guide assemblies is shown. The saw carriage is movably mounted to the remainder of the saw to be substantially free to rebound or move away from the workpiece during tilting of the blade to avoid digging in or shearing off of the blade teeth and to permit close spacing of the blade guides next to the workpiece. The saw includes a feed control system having both an orifice control circuit and a support force control circuit. A method is disclosed which is comprised of using the support force circuit to vary the rate of cutting during the cut to prevent overloading of the blade and/or stalling of the machine. Sensors feedback signals which adjust the support force circuit to control feeding.

    • A compact, variable speed pulley assembly is disclosed in which pulley faces are mounted to a pulley shaft for rotation with respect thereto and for relative axial displacement along the shaft. A torsion spring is connected to transmit a torque force from the shaft to at least one of the pulley faces. The pulley assembly further includes a motion damping brake which applies a sliding friction force resisting relative angular displacement between the pulley faces and the pulley shaft. This friction force damps out over-correction by the torsion spring for speed variations induced by changes in the V-belt width, machine dynamic imbalance and workpiece characteristics. Fatigue of the torsion spring is eliminated without increasing the pulley assembly bulk by providing a second compression spring or providing a conical torsion spring.

    • A material-handling apparatus and method are disclosed for use in high-speed feeding of bar stock or the like to a precise registered position with respect to a machine tool. The apparatus includes a stop which senses the position of the material and is coupled to a controller for a high-speed conveyor. The stop causes disengagement of the high speed conveyor in advance of the registered position and simultaneously causes an inching device, such as a movable vise, to move into gripping engagement with the work piece. The inching vise brakes the speed or advancement of the stock to an inching speed, and when the stop senses advancement of the work piece to the registered position at the inching speed, the inching vise advancement is terminated. Reversing of the inching vise upon an overshoot is also provided.
