    • A stairlift system is provided comprising a rail and a stanchion (10) for supporting the stairlift rail. The stanchion (10) comprises a foot (9), an upstanding member and fixing means (40). The foot (9) comprises a bottom surface for resting on a floor. The upstanding member comprises a first and second element (8, 7). The first element (8) comprises a first end portion for coupling to the foot (9) so as to transfer a load to the foot (9). The second element (7) comprises a mount (11) to which the stairlift rail is attachable. A distance between the mount (11) and the first end portion is adjustable by moving the second element (8) relative to the first element (7). The fixing means (40) is operable to reversibly fix the first element (8) to the second element (7) so that the upstanding member can support the load, and the fixing means (40) is configured to provide a continuous adjustment range of the distance. The fixing means comprises a gripper (40) operable to provide reversible frictional engagement between the gripper (40)and the second element(7). The gripper (40) is configured to be positioned within the upstanding member and to frictionally engage with an interior surface of the second element (7).

    • If a mobility aid develops a problem, the person controlling the aid may be unable to move or request assistance or call for help. Furthermore, even if someone was alerted to their predicament, that person may not be able to identify and thus rectify the problem expediently without expert assistance. A system (10) for monitoring for a fault in a mobility aid (12) includes a fault detector for detecting a fault in the mobility aid. The system also includes a signal generator (14) for generating a signal representative of the fault is also provided. A wireless transmitter (16) for transmitting fault signal, and a wireless receiver (18) for receiving the fault signal are also provided. The receiver is also operable for causing an alert to be sent to an operator that the mobility aid (12) requires attention.

    • A stairlift (12) comprises a carriage (10) moveable along a rail (14) by a drive means (18) and a seat (34) moveably coupled to the carriage. Levelling means are provided for altering the orientation of the seat with respect to the carriage. Further, limiting means (40) are provided for limiting movement of the seat with respect to the carriage so as not to exceed a predetermined angle of inclination of the seat, and comprising locking means (42). When the angle of inclination of the seat reaches the predetermined angle, the limiting means mechanically engages with the seat assembly to prevent further movement of the seat and operates the locking means to secure the seat in position.
