[Class 74 (ii)] The extremity of the hook or beard of a knitting-needle is turned out and back upon itself until the tip 13 crosses the beard shank 12 to form an elongated eye 18. The portions are spaced apart at the point of crossing to allow the passage of thread between them. A groove 15 in the needle stem 10 is deep enough to receive the tip 13 and the whole or part of the eye 18, to permit of casting off. In front elevation, the looped part lies within the thickness of the needle stem behind it. In forming a twisted loop fabric, Fig. 11, after the old loop has been cleared down the stem beyond groove 15, a new thread is laid and sunk into loops, and moved to a position beneath the beard, which is then pressed, and the old loop knocked over. The beard is again pressed, and the loop on the stem beneath the beard is moved inwards over the point 13, and into the eye 18. The thread now extends as in Fig. 4A. The loop is moved to the extremity 12 of the eye, changing into a twisted loop as it does so, out along the shank 12, to the head 11, by a wheel or the like, and on to the needle stem, around which it becomes looped approximately one and a half turns. The beard now being open, this loop is pushed in along the needle stem by the action of another wheel, and is subsequently cast off over a new loop. Plain stitches may be produced on any needle by omitting the second pressing operation. An inclined wheel 22 having fabric-engaging spikes 23, may be used to slacken the fabric during movement of the loops along the needles.
