    • An electrophoresis system for removing or reducing concentration of a metabolic component from blood or plasma of a subject, the system comprising: (a) a cathode in a cathode zone; (b) an anode in an anode zone, the anode disposed relative to the cathode so as to be adapted to generate an electric field in an electric field area therebetween upon application of an electric potential between the cathode and the anode; (c) a first ion-permeable barrier having a defined pore size and pore size distribution disposed in the electric field area; (d) a second ion-permeable barrier having a defined pore size and pore size distribution disposed between the cathode zone and the first barrier so as to define a treatment chamber therebetween; (e) means adapted for cooling blood or plasma from the subject; (f) means adapted to provide dialysate to the cathode zone and the anode zone; and (g) means adapted to provide blood or plasma from the subject to the treatment chamber; wherein, upon application of the electric potential, a metabolic component from the blood or plasma is caused to move through at least one barrier into at least one of the cathode or anode zones.

    • Methods for isolating functionally active Factor VIII using a membrane-based separation system containing a separation membrane to create a first and second interstitial volume between at least two restriction membranes. One or more stabilizing agents are added to the sample and/or an interstitial volume. A solvent in the first interstitial volume maintains FVIII in a desired charge state. Applying a potential between the first and second interstitial volumes separates FVIII on one side of the separation membrane from unwanted molecules on the other side of the separation membrane. These methods may also be used as a substitute for one or more steps in a conventional purification scheme for the separation of native or recombinant FVIII.

    • A method for determining the functional activity of activated protein C in a human plasma sample. The plasma sample is incubated with (i) exogenous reagents which activate factor V and the common pathway for blood coagulation either through factor X or by inducing the presence of thrombin in a factor V dependent manner, (ii) activated exogenous protein C; and (iii) components, such as phospholipid and calcium ions, that are necessary for efficient clotting of the plasma. The reaction is monitored to detect an end point such as the clotting time or the change in colour of a chromometric or fluorometric substrate. The end point time is compared with that obtained by a normal blood sample under the same conditions and/or with the plasma sample but without the addition of activated protein C. A decrease in clotting time as compared with normal blood is indicative of an impairment of or resistance to activated protein C.
