    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalytic converter and a filter for an exhaust emission control mechanism of an internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: In the combination 10 of the catalytic converter and the filter for exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine, a member, having multiple passages 18 axially extending from the upstream front side 14 on the downstream back side 16, is provided. Each passage 18 has right and left sidewalls 20, 22 formed by a pleated filter medium 24 and upper and lower walls formed by upper and lower boundary layers. The right and left side walls 20, 22 are extended axially from the upstream side to the downstream side continuously. The sidewalls 20, 22 are provided with first upstream sections 30, 32 adjoining the upstream front side 14 and second downstream sections 34, 36 adjoining the downstream back side 16. One of the first and second sections is a catalyzing section 33 for supporting a catalyst for exhaust gas, and the other is a filtering section 35, where sealing members 38 and 40 for blocking flow alternately are provided in passages 48 and 44, respectively, axially separately from each other to make exhaust gas flow through the pleated filter medium 24.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrostatic precipitator reducing the contamination of a ground electrode by separating a charging stage and a collection stage. SOLUTION: The electrostatic precipitator 100 for cleaning a gas blowing from the upstream to the downstream along a gas flow path 102 comprises a first zone 104 including a corona discharge ionization zone for making ions which charge a particle in gas in turn, and a second zone 106 including a collector zone located downstream of the first zone and collecting the charged particles. The precipitator 100 further comprises an anti-collector guide 108 preventing a collection of the charged particles in the first zone to direct the charged particles to flow to the second zone 106 downstream and collect the charged particles at the second zone, and a corona discharge electrode 110 for making an electrical field providing corona discharge ionization to the first zone 104 wherein the anti-collector guide 108 includes electrical field shielding which shields the charged particles from the electrical field in the first zone to prevent a collection of the charged particles in the first zone.
