    • An apparatus and method for the self-measurement of intraocular pressure utilize a tonometer disposed within a housing (148) and having a tonometer tip (142). The apparatus further includes an adjustment mechanism (164) in communication with the tonometer for positioning the tonometer tip in contact with a test eye of the user, and an illuminator (138) mounted within the housing adjacent the tonometer tip. A receiver (130) is aligned with the tonometer tip for receiving an applanation pattern created by contact of the tonometer tip with the test eye and a display (128) is provided in communication with the receiver for displaying the applanation pattern to an observing eye of the user. The intraocular pressure of the test eye is determined from a force applied by the tonometer tip upon observation of a selected applanation pattern by the observing eye.

    • An ophthalmic insert (24) and method for sustained release of medication to the eye are provided. The insert (24) includes a body portion (30) sized to pass through a lacrimal punctum (14, 16) and be positioned within a lacrimal canaliculus (18, 20) of the eyelid. The insert further includes a collarette (26) connected to the body portion (30) and sized to rest on the exterior of the lacrimal punctum, the collarette having a pore (42) provided therein. A reservoir (34) is contained at least partially within the body portion (30) and in fluid communication with the pore (42), wherein the reservoir (34) is designed to store and release medication through the pore (42) and onto the eye over time in a controlled manner while the insert (24) is positioned in the eyelid. Preferably, the pore (42) is constructed with a specific geometry appropriate to control the rate of release of the medication onto the eye.
