[Also in Division B7] A mobile support for a chair seat 18 comprises a base 10 suspended upon a film of air so as to be readily movable. The base 10 is provided with an air inlet 140 communicating with an annular chamber 142 in which an air compressor 144 is mounted. The compressor is driven by an electric motor 148 which can be turned on and off by a switch 218. The chamber 142 communicates with an annular distribution chamber 158 formed by the peripheral flange 12 of the base and concentric annular walls 160, 162 connected by an annular plate 164. Air under pressure is discharged through spaced openings 166 in the plate 164 to inflate a sealing member 168 of porous flexible material attached to the periphery of the flange 12. Air is discharged through the pores of the sealing member 168, a thin film of air being formed between the member 168 and the floor. The annular plate 164 may extend beyond the periphery of the flange 12 and be downwardly bent to form a grinding flange 198 covered by a material having a low coefficient of friction with the floor surface. Instead of using compressor 144, air under pressure may be supplied from an external source and conducted to the chamber 158 through a control valve. The chair 18 is vertically not non-rotatably adjustable with respect to the base 10. The chair is mounted in a header 16 having dependent vertical guide rods 20 movable through guides 22 in the base. The header is moved vertically by a reversible electric motor 40 which rotates a sleeve 28 provided with a ball-nut 26 which rotates on a screw shaft 24 of the header 16. A double throw switch controls the motor 40. When the motor is switched off a brake and clutch mechanism operates to prevent further rotation of the shaft 28.

    • 1,243,031. Dental syringe assembly. DENTSPLY INTERNATIONAL Inc. 29 Oct., 1968 [30 Oct., 1967], No. 51316/68. Heading A5R. A dental syringe assembly, for the supply of heated air, water or an air-water spray to the mouth comprises an elongated handle 10, Fig. 1, containing a heating element 38, and with a discharge head 12 at one end, the other end being connected to a flexible supply hose 24 via a connecting element 74. The head 12 has a nozzle 14 and operating lever 18, the handle 10 containing conduits (28), Fig. 2 (not shown) and 30 for supplying air and water respectively to the head, and electrical conductors 40, 42 leading to the heating element 38 fitted into a recess 36 in the head. The coupling end of the handle contains an insulating block 48 through which the conduits (28), 30 and conductors 40, 42 pass, the ends of the said conduits and conductors being arranged to form plug and socket connections with conduits 88, 90 and conductors 54 mounted in the connecting element 74. Insulating sleeves 92 surrounding the conductors 54 extend through the element 74 and also partially cover the projecting portions of the conductors. When the connecting element is aligned and press-fitted to the handle, a rotatable, but longitudinally fixed collar 26 on the element engages a screw thread 20 on the handle, so that a fluid tight coupling may be achieved. The hose 24, which at one end is fixed to a dental supply unit, and which contains air and water conduits 62, 60 and conductors 56, 58, terminates at its other end in a terminal collar 66 having a metal ferrule 68 at its outermost end, the ferrule having a flange 70 which may be mated to a complementary flange 72 of the connecting element 74. Plug and socket connections are also provided between the hose 24 and element 74. In order to prevent incorrect alignment of the conduits and conductors the conductors are displaced to one side of the central axis as in Fig. 3 (not shown).

    • 1,038,795. Grinding. DENTISTS SUPPLY CO. OF NEW YORK. July 2, 1964 [July 5, 1963], No. 27444/64. Heading B3D. [Also in Division A5] A hand grinding tool 10 comprises a housing 18 for a turbine shaft 30 and turbine rotor 32, to which housing is connected an elongated tubular member for housing rotary drive shaft 38 having grinding tool 42 attached thereto, and speed governor or brake means comprising brake member 44 responsive to centrifugal force and brake member 24. Brake member 44 comprising flexible legs interconnected to turbine shaft 30 is such that when a predetermined speed of rotation of shaft 30 is achieved the legs of member 44 are moved under centrifugal force against the friction faces 50 of thimble-like brake member 24 surrounding brake member 44 to restrict the speed of rotation of the shaft 30. When tool 42 is placed under load, the rotational speed of shaft 30 drops and the frictional surfaces of the members 44 and 24 move apart to allow the extra power of the shaft 30 to be applied to the tool 42. The members 44 and 24 are adjustable such that the centrifugal force required to bring them into engagement may be varied. The pressure fluid which may be air entraining oil mist, operating the turbine may be exhausted such that it cools and lubricates the braking mechanism and the bearings for the turbine and drive shafts. Cooling water may be applied to tool 42 by conduit 78.
