    • A means for sensing the amount of a liquid bonding agent applied to secure a corrugated medium to a liner includes a capacitance device, one plate of which is formed by a sensing surface positioned adjacent the corrugated medium, liner and the applied liquid bonding agent. The other plate of the capacitance device is formed by the moving corrugated medium, liner and the applied bonding agent. There are means for applying an electric signal to the sensing surface and means for sensing variations in that signal caused by the amount of the liquid bonding agent applied to the corrugated medium and liner. The sensed variations in the applied electric signal are used to control the application of the bonding agent to the corrugated medium. The capacitance device may include a plurality of individual sensing areas having a width and spacing related to the width and spacing of the tips of the corrugated medium. The periodic signal generated by the capacitance device may be used to measure the actual amount of bonding agent, the residual moisture level in the liner and the amount of material passing from the single facer which is applying the liner to the corrugated medium.

    • A corrugating machine for producing single-faced or double-faced corrugated board which utilizes a thermal sensing system to determine the length of the web in the bridge instead of an ink-based sensing system. The corrugating machine includes means for supplying a first paper web, means for corrugating a second paper web to produce a corrugated paper web, and means for adhering the first paper web to the corrugated paper web to form a single-faced corrugated web. The corrugating machine has a splicer for splicing one of the paper webs at a splice point, means for applying a liquid spot, such as water, to one of the paper webs, and means for thermally detecting the liquid spot after the liquid spot is applied, such as a temperature detector. The corrugating machine determines the length of the single-faced corrugated web based upon when the liquid spot is applied by the applying means and when the liquid spot is thermally detected by the detecting means.

A movable piston is positioned within the valve body and there is a passage in the piston opening to the chamber with the passage terminating in an application opening. A movable valve stem is positioned to open and close upon the passage chamber opening to control the flow of material to the passage and application opening. A negative pressure is created at the application opening at or immediately after closure of the valve stem upon the passage chamber opening to thereby provide a sharp cutoff in the application of the material from the opening.

    • A system for detecting a jam condition in a series of sequentially moving members which are passing a plurality of stations. The system finds particular application in the production of corrugated board or the like in which at the first station there may be a slitting or slotting or printing drum which is performing an operation on a series of moving corrugated board members. There are detection means at each station and successive signals from one station indicating the presence of a member at that station without a resetting signal from the next sequential station will provide a signal indicative of a jam condition. There are means to prevent a false indication of a jam which can be caused by the absence of a member at the first station in the system.

The sensor initiates a second counting action at detection of the trailing edge of a glue application area and the counting means stops glue application after the same predetermined number of pulses representative of the sensor glue applicator fixed distance.
