Variable-speed epicyclic gearing.- In epicyclic gearing of the kind in which the ratio varies automatically with the load, due to the action on the planet wheels of inertial and gyroscopic resistance, supplementary fluid or solid frictional resistance is provided. A driven shaft 2, Fig. 1 (Prov.), carries a sun bevel wheel 5 meshing with bevel pinions 6 revoluble on opposed or equiangularly-spaced arms 7 rigid with the driving-shaft 1. Splined on the boss 8 of each pinion are a cup 15 and friction discs 9 alternating with discs 10 slidable on studs 11 on a plate 12 fast on the spindle 7, the cup 15 being screwed to a drum 16 containing oil or other viscous fluid. Each drum 16 is formed with curved radial blades 18 coacting with like blades 17 fixed to the spindle 7 to produce turbulence in the oil &c., and thus, in conjunction with the gyroscopic effect of the drum 16, resist the rotation of the pinions 6 and start the drive. Centrifugal force on the parts 10, 15, 16, 18 also presses the friction discs together and may produce a solid lock at high speeds. In a modification, Fig. 1 (Comp.), the pinions 6 have rotary and slight axial freedom on the preferably bushed spindles 7 extending from radial arms 48 and carry conical brake elements 32 adapted to coact with elements 34 fixed to the spindles 7. Each member 32 carries a massive rim 33 and is pressed by a spring 36 acting through a ball race 37. Initial drive to the sun bevel 5 is effected by gyroscopic action, but -when centrifugal force overcomes the springs 36, the brakes 32, 34 engage under a pressure dependent on the speed. The pinions 6 may be axially immovable and the rims 33 &c. slidable thereon. The gear-ratio of the wheels 5, 6 should lie between 4 : 1 and 6 : 1. The device is preferably enclosed in a divided casing 40, 41 with an access door 42, and may be used in conjunction with an ordinary gear-box.
