    • A fiber optic medical device/system is presented, comprising laser source, connectible to optical fibers and enclosed to ensure sterility and safe operation. It is a single use system enclosed and sterilized, including laser source and, optical fiber attached in a sterile tube. Another embodiment is hermetically sealed laser unit with simple connection system to a properly shaped fiber optic. Joined hand piece and fiber can be directly inserted to treat target tissue. Laser handle is aseptically packaged. In other embodiments, fiber is proximally terminated in solid funnel-shaped end to provide unique directional keyed junction with laser unit. In another embodiment, unit includes fiber joined to it, where a laser module can be added away from the fiber end and laser module need not be sterilized, but entire unit is safe for medical use in sterile fields. Enclosure also serves as handpiece for manipulating device. Another preferred embodiment has laser unit attached to a rigid delivery system for laparoscopic procedures.

    • Improved, efficient devices/methods for medical and cosmetic applications, involving the delivery of laser energy to tissue are provided. In a preferred embodiment a portable, easy-to-use laser system comprises at least one laser source operating at one or more laser wavelengths; an electronic visual display having a n- dimensional input interface to set/select laser parameters; and at least one waveguide optically coupled to the laser source to convey laser radiation to a treatment site. The n-dimensional input interface inputs/selects lasing parameters which allows the selection of a combination of output wavelengths and powers by simply touching the electronic visual display.. Method of use comprises the steps of placing at least one waveguide at preselected treatment site; selecting a combination of laser wavelengths and power by interacting with an electronic visual display; and irradiating the treatment site.

    • Improved/efficient fiber laser systems are provided for medical/cosmetic applications, comprising at least one pump source, optically coupled with at least one fiber laser. The fiber laser comprises an irregularly-shaped single-, double- or multiple-clad fiber of unconventional structure and geometry, and means for partially/completely reflecting the pump radiation, such as Bragg gratings. The fiber laser system further comprises at least one fiber optic delivery device optically coupled with the pump source, with the irregularly-shaped single-, double- or multiple-clad fiber laser, or with both, to convey laser radiation to a treatment site. The fiber optic delivery device comprises one or more waveguides, preferably optical fibers. The irregularly-shaped fiber laser and waveguides of the fiber optic delivery device have the same or different tip configurations to perform the treatment according to therapeutic needs. In a preferred embodiment, the fiber laser treatment system operating at 915 + 30 nm, 975 ± 30 nm and/or 1550 ± 40, comprises control means to select delivery of one, two or three output laser beams, and regulates their respective output powers.

    • Connectors for optically coupling radiation accurately from radiation sources into waveguides in medical applications are provided. A preferred embodiment for coupling laser sources into optical fibers provides a connector comprising an outer body for handling connector; a two-part ferrule; an inner body which protects ferrule and holds its two parts together; a collet chuck through which an optical fiber is introduced; a spring; a ferrule interlock; and bending protection with a long fiber protection end. Main features are that the inner body moves within the outer body longitudinally, the spring-loaded ferrules move against a fixed position element in the laser housing via the spring load, and their relative shapes are designed to be assembled in only one possible angle position,thus maintaining alignment of elements to reduce/avoid lost power absorbed by the connector's proximal end due to coupling. The ferrule is mounted inside the connector and does not emerge from it for protecting the ferrule. In another embodiment the connector provides an electronic signature such as an RFID tag for waveguide recognition in a position close enough to the laser source to ensure identification. Additionally, the connector has an optional electric power and signal port.

    • A method and a device for minimally invasive treatment of diseased deep and superficial venous valves are disclosed. Treatment seeks to repair/rejuvenate dysfunctional valve by reducing the circumference of dilated valve rings and by restoring their original shape and function using laser energy to make physical suture points and shrink collagen in selected points. Real time monitoring is by angioscopic view and endovenous echographic control. In a preferred embodiment, system comprises a specific catheter-like device for endovenous insertion that allows for real time view of energy emission and venous surface to be corrected. Catheter flexibility is such that viewing angle and direct energy emission can be oriented properly. Catheter can comprise channels for irrigation or for interchange of laser fibers according to desired irradiation pattern. A preferred embodiment of catheter device also comprises cuffs for temporary occlusion, by inflation and deflation. In preferred embodiments, 1470 nm, 1550 nm or 1900 nm laser energy is applied. This treatment can be applied to venous valves of the deep venous system, as well as valves of the sapheno-femoral junction, terminal valve and pre-terminal valve.

    • An adapter for endoscopic treatments has a fiber constraint device that is set at a desired maximum fiber retraction distance, and provides a physical barrier to prevent excessive fiber retraction into the endoscope. The restricted retraction prevents the fiber from firing within the endoscope, thus avoiding expensive damage to both the endoscope and fiber. This benefits the patient with potentially shorter treatment time and less exposure to anesthesia. The adapter also limits maximum extension of fibers. Limiting maximum extension protects the fiber tip and avoids patient complications. The adapter is securely attached to the optical fiber with a connecting means. When using directionally radiating fiber tips, fiber orientation can be defined and the fiber can be rotated relative to the initial angular position of the fiber tip.
