    • A selectively actuatable child resistant lighter device is disclosed which includes a body defining reservoir for containing a combustible gaseous medium such as butane, and having a valve arranged to be selectively actuated between a normally closed position and an open position which permits the exit of the gaseous medium. Such child resistant lighter can selectively produce sparks at a location proximate to the gaseous medium exit to ignite the gaseous medium. A safety mechanism normally prevents actuation of the valve to the open position. Such child resistant lighter device embodies a resiliently releasable safety latch which prevents the actuation of the valve actuator to the open position. The safety latch is selectively movable to a plurality of positions out of interference with the valve actuator, so that the gaseous medium may be released and ignited by the sparks. The safety latch is resiliently structured and mounted such that once a flame is produced and the valve actuator is released, the safety latch returns to its closed or locked position to prevent actuation of the valve to the open position by prevention of the pivotal motion of the valve actuator. To "re-use" the lighter, the safety latch must again be moved to one of the open or unlocked positions so that the valve actuator can be opened for subsequent ignition of the gaseous medium. Such mechanism is difficult for a young child to light, but is capable of actuation by adults.

    • The present invention relates to a lighter which a user actuates by at least two different modes of operation. Li the first mode, a plunger member is positioned to allow a biasing member to oppose movement of an actuating assembly so that a user releases fuel and ignites the lighter only if a high-actuation-force is applied to the actuator. In this first mode, the lighter resists operation by unintended users by requiring a user to have a predetermined level of strength to actuate the lighter. In the second mode, the plunger member is moved to a different position so that the biasing member does not oppose movement of the actuating assembly to the same extent as the first mode so that a user may release fuel and ignite the lighter if a low-actuation-force is applied to the actuator. Moving the plunger member from the first position to the second position preferably requires the user to have a predetermined level of cognitive abilities and/or physical characteristics in order to resist use by unintended users.

    • A multi-layer pressure sensitive correction tape useful for masking handwritten and/or printed characters comprising a release liner (3), a masking layer (4) and preferred embodiment of the invention, the masking layer (4) and pressure sensitive adhesive layer (5) comprise formulations of reactive monomers or oligomers which are radiation-cured after the formulations are applied to the correction tape assembly. In a more preferred embodiment of the invention the masking layer and pressure sensitive adhesive layer formulations contain no volatile solvents when these formulations are applied to the correction tape assembly. The radiation-cured layers are essentially insoluble in organic solvents and water, and the radiation-cured layers exhibit improved film toughness and improved resistance to ink "bleed through". Additionally, the present invention is directed to a process for making such a multilayer correction tape having at least one radiation cured layer.

    • The piezoelectric ignition mechanism of the present invention has a telescopic assembly having an inner and an outer members aided by a return spring for maintaining a maximum extension between the members. The inner member includes a piezoelectric element which is immobilized between an anvil and impact pad over which a plexor strikes to generate a spark. An impact spring for aiding the plexor is guided in the interior of the telescopic assembly and is disposed between the plexor and an end member connected to the outer telescopic member. A resistant spring is also disposed at or near the end member to provide additional resistance to the operation of the piezoelectric mechanism in order to discourage the undesirable operation by young users.

    • A writing instrument (10) is disclosed having a barrel (12) defining an internal passage including an ink reservoir. A venting mechanism (20) is positioned at least partially within the internal passage of the barrel adjacent and anterior end portion thereof. The venting mechanism (20) includes an elongated body defining an axial bore therethrough in communication with the ink reservoir (24), and a plurality of spaced apart fins (32) peripherally surrounding the elongated body and defining a plurality of annular channels between the fins. A second supply rod (50) conveys ink from a posterior end portion disposed within the bore in the venting mechanism and contacting the first supply rod to an anterior end portion disposed within the bore of the point support member, to the writing point. A circuitous air path is provided to vent the ink reservoir at the posterior end portion to the writing tip portion.
