摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve connection of the ultrasonic output for the soft tissue, by providing an ultrasonic system for surgery that can treat soft tissue equally in a transverse contact surface.
SOLUTION: The ultrasonic system includes an ultrasonic transducer (104) to generate ultrasonic vibration, and an ultrasonic transmission coupler (106) which receives vibration and transmits the vibration received to an ultrasonic assembly (110) for surgery. The ultrasonic assembly for surgery includes a blade (112) to cut and/or coagulate tissue, and a clamp (114) to be used with the blade to compress or clamp the tissue. It can ultrasonically vibrate either the blade or the clamp, or both of them, and has a substantially curved form. The curved form can be optimized to improve the connection condition of the ultrasonic output to the tissue to be processed.

摘要： A method of suture welding is disclosed which includes: receiving suture segments between first and second jaw members, the first and second jaw members being in an open state, closing the first and second jaw members to captively hold and position the suture segments between the first and second jaw members; selectively applying an elongated joiner element to the suture segments where the joiner element has a selectively operative heating element facing the suture segments; and applying energy to the heating element to weld the suture segments-to-be-welded, whereby the heating element has a temperature above a predetermined threshold adapted to at least partially melt the suture segments.

摘要： A blade suture needle is adapted for use in a suture needle assembly, and with a suture passer device, for passing a suture needle assembly through tissue. The suture needle includes an elongated resilient sheet body member bounded by opposite principal surfaces. The body member includes at least one central aperture extending between the principal surfaces, having dimensions to permit of a capturing flange to pass therethrough. The suture needle may be part of a needle assembly further including an elongated suture passing through an aperture in the needle. A suture passer device includes an elongated pusher guide with pair of opposed jaw members disposed at its distal end, which may be opened or closed in response to a user action at its proximal end. The guide allows passage of an elongated pusher element through a pusher channel therein. One of the jaw members includes a suture assembly channel aligned with the pusher channel. The other jaw member has an aperture passing therethrough, which is aligned with the suture assembly channel when the jaw members are closed. This other jaw member includes an elongated resilient flange fixedly or retractably attached to the jaw member at the periphery of the aperture, and extending across the aperture to an opposite point on the periphery of the aperture.

摘要： A prosthetic cardiac valve assembly for sutureless implantation in a patient. The assembly includes a generally disk-shaped valve annulus element and one or more generally disk-shaped retainer elements. The elements are adapted for mutual engagement and for engagement with a host tissue region so as to fix a portion of the host tissue between them in a sutureless bond. Ultrasonic or thermal energy is applied to one or more of the elements to bond them together. Either the valve annulus element or the retainer element includes a plurality of projections, and the corresponding element includes a corresponding plurality of apertures for receiving the projections, thus providing for mutual physical engagement. The valve annulus element can include a plurality of valve leaflets which open and close in response to fluid pressure differentials across them. Various insertion devices for the assembly are designed to facilitate insertion of the elements in the heart through a relatively small incision. The elements can be implanted, assembled and bonded together in situ around the host tissue.

摘要： A fused loop of an elongated material, such as a surgical suture, and apparatus for making the loop are described. Portions of one or more segments of elongated material may be fused in an ultrasonic welding process to form a welded joint. Multiple materials each with different a different melting point may be used for one or more fibers within the elongated material. The elongated material may include a sheath, which may be used to protect a core within the elongated material. A fused region of the fused loop may be formed when a material with a lower melting temperature, compared to one or more other materials in the elongated material, is caused to melt. A related ultrasonic welding apparatus may include a temperature sensor for control of the welding process.
