    • A surgical instrument (10) has an elongate support shaft (14), a tip assembly (16) permanently attached (72) to the shaft (14), a cutting jaw which opens in a backward facing direction and which is laterally offset from the longitudinal axis (26) of the support shaft (14) and a rod (74) extending coaxially with the elongate support shaft (14) for applying closing and opening forces to the cutting jaw. The tip assembly (16) comprises a stationary portion (22) and a movable portion (20) having respective tissue cutting edges (54, 56, 58) and (36, 38, 40) which define the cutting jaw. The stationary portion (22) of the tip assembly (16) is permanently attached (72) to the distal end (70) of the support shaft (14) and the movable portion (20) of the tip assembly (16) is pivotally attached (32, 50, 82) to a distal end of the stationary portion (22). The stationary portion (22) of the tip assembly (16) has a plurality of cutting edges (54, 56, 58) which define an opening (24) which extends axially adjacent the longitudinal axis (26) of the support shaft (14). The cutting jaw has a fully open position in which the movable element (20) extends outwardly from the longitudinal axis (26) and toward a proximal end of the elongate shaft (14) at an angle (A) of approximately 60 DEG . The cutting jaw has a fully closed position in which the cutting element (20) is disposed within the opening (24) in the stationary portion (22) of the tip assembly (16). The tip assembly (16) has an overall height dimension (H), when the cutting element (20) is in the fully closed position, which is substantially equal to a corresponding cross-sectional dimension of the elongate support shaft (14).
