    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a two-way assist mechanism for controlling the movement of a body panel by the cooperation of a gas spring and a retractable device.
      SOLUTION: The retractable device 32 includes a spring assembly 44 received in a tube 40 that is attached to the gas spring 30. The body panel is attached to a vehicle frame with a pivotal connection portion. One of the gas spring 30 and retractable device 32 is connected to the vehicle frame and the other of the gas spring 30 and retractable device 32 is connected to the body panel. The retractable device 32 acts as a solid link as the body panel moves from a closed position toward an open position. Once the center of gravity of the body panel rotates beyond the pivotal connection portion, the retractable device 32 resists further the movement of the body panel until a fully open position is achieved.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To exclude dead band of actuation which is occurred by construction of an orifice of a piston when a gas spring vertically moves.
      SOLUTION: The gas spring 10 or a piston assembly 16 for a damper includes first and second orifice plates 30, 32 which are axially spaced apart from each other. First and second low friction rings 50, 52 is disposed between the first and second orifice plates. The first and second low friction rings are separated from each other by an elastic member 60. The elastic member acts between the first and second low friction rings and is configured so that the dead band actuation is excluded when the piston assembly moves between extension and contraction positions.

      SOLUTION: A gas spring assembly has the rod 14 and a piston 15 stored in a tube or a cylinder 12. A first rod end 32 is connected to the piston 15 in order to move the piston back and forth in the cylinder. A second rod end 34 is installed in one side of a vehicle panel or a vehicle member. The cylinder 12 is installed in the other side of the vehicle panel or the vehicle member. The gas spring assembly has the elastic cover 30 to cover the rod 14 and the cylinder 12, extending from the first rod end 34 to the cylinder end 32 at the end. The elastic cover 30 extends and retreats as the rod 14 moves, and is hermetically sealed at both ends of the elastic cover 30 to completely seal the gas spring assembly.
