    • A control valve for a fluid treatment system includes a manifold (10) which mounts a pair of open-ended, cylindrical valve bodies (11, 12) and interchangeable single and double poppet valve assemblies (146, 147) received into the open ends of the valve body. The poppet valve assemblies have diaphragm valve actuators disposed between chambers that are in fluid communication with selective ones of an array of pilot valves (13) also mounted on the manifold. The control valve includes a timer mechanism (15) for actuating the pilot valves (13) in a controlled sequence. A tank adapter connects the manifold to a treatment tank. A variety of sequences of flow paths can be selected by selection of the interchangeable poppet valve assemblies, by plugging selected ports in the valve housing, and by capping open, unused ends of the valve bodies.

    • A water treatment apparatus has a tank that contains a resin bed through which water flows. The apparatus has a controller that occasionally measures the conductivity of the resin bed at two spaced apart locations to produce first and second conductivity measurements. The ratio of the two conductivity measurements then is calculated. The present ratio value, along with the minimum and maximum ratio values that occurred since a previous regeneration of the resin bed, are used to determine the movement of an exhaustion front through the resin bed. A probability of exhaustion also is determined and when that probability exceeds a given value, regeneration of the resin bed is initiated. The conductivity measurements are used to determine if the resin bed has lost efficiency and in which event a warning signal is sent to the user. During regeneration, the conductivity at one of the locations in the resin bed is monitored to detect whether a regenerant has entered the tank; if not another warning signal is sent to the user.

    • The filter assembly includes a filter unit (24) disposed in a vertical tank (12) and includes a first end plate or drain head (26) having an opening (38) in fluid communication with a filtrate port (18) in the tank, a longitudinally movable second end plate or compression head (28) spaced in generally parallel relationship to the drain head and an elongated sleeve of flexible filter material, such as a woven fabric, connected to and extending between the drain and compression heads to define a filtrate chamber (54). The filter tube (52) is in an extended condition for filtering fluid. When it is desired to remove materials collected on the outer surface of the filter, the compression head is moved toward the drain head to compress the filter tube, at least a substantial portion of the material dislodged from the filter tube is carried from the tank with the overflowing waste water through an overflow outlet (20).

    • A monitoring apparatus (10) includes a conversion module (11) having firmware embedded therein for converting text data in a first code such as ASCII to binary text data in a second code such as facsimile scan line code. A memory module (17, 19) is connected to the conversion module (11) for facilitating communication of text data in a first code between the conversion module (11) and such memory module (17, 19). An analog module (13) is included in the conversion module (11) for interfacing a modem (10b) with a telephone line (39). The apparatus (10) is arranged to monitor a parameter of a controlled process variable, e.g., temperature, signal strength, humidity or the like and responsively generate text data in a first code. The apparatus (10) converts such text data in a first code to binary text data in a second code and transmits such converted text data directly to a facsimile machine (53). Such operation is accomplished without the use of a PC or floppy or hard discs, program cards or other PC-like devices. A method for transmitting text data directly to a facsimile machine (53) is also disclosed.
