    • 1308129 Recovering polymers from aqueous gels ATLAS CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Inc 19 April 1971 [16 March 1970] 24032/71 Headings C3G and C3P Water-soluble high molecular weight polymers are recovered from stiff, rubbery, aqueous gels thereof by a process which comprises subdividing the aqueous gel, contacting the subdivided gel with an organic liquid which boils below 150‹ C. under the process conditions, is water-miscible, and is non-reactive with and non-solvent for the polymer, and recovering the precipitate so formed from the bulk liquor in the form of a polymer product which is at least 50 weight per cent solids. The product is preferably dried to 70 to 90 weight per cent solids. Subdividing may be effected by cutting, milling, grinding, extruding, tearing or shredding, preferably by extruding and cutting. Preferred organic liquids are C 1-4 alkanols and acetone. The polymer may be derived from acrylic or methacrylic acids, or amides or quaternized aminoethyl esters thereof, optionally with acrylonitrile, vinyl sulphonic acid or vinylphosphonic acid. Examples describe the preparation of gels by polymerizing (1) acrylamide and (2) sodium acrylate with potassium persulphate; and (3 and 4) acrylamide in the presence of corn starch, (5, 6 and 16) acrylamide and sodium acrylate, (11) methacrylic acid and (12) N,N - dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate with high energy radiation; and the products and (15) acrylamide/vinyl sulphonic acid copolymer gel are subdivided in the presence of methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, t-butanol, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone or diethyl ketone.

    • 1279108 Flocculating with water-soluble nitrogen-containing polymers ATLAS CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Inc 2 Dec 1969 [6 Dec 1968] 58832/69 Heading C1C [Also in Division C3] Water-soluble, high molceular weight polymeric flocculants having an intrinsic viscosity (measured in 2N NaCl solution at 25‹ C.) of 6 to 30 dl./g. are prepared by irradiating with high energy ionizing radiation at an intensity of from 250 to 200,000 rads/hour to a total dose of from 1000 to 200,000 rads an aqueous solution of 10-45% by weight concentration of (a) at least one water-soluble monomer of the formula CH 2 = CR-CO-Y where R is H or CH 3 and + Y is -OC 2 H 4 NR 1 R 2 R 3 .X where R 1 , R 2 and R 3 are C 1 -C 4 alkyl and X is an anion or (b) a monomer mixture comprising at least 15% by weight of a monomer as defined in (a) but wherein Y may alternatively represent -NH 2 and up to 85% by weight of at least one other vinyl monomer. The polymers are obtained in aqueous gel form, which form is advantageously used directly for flocculating since it dissolves readily in water; but the polymer can be isolated in particulate form if desired. The products are particularly useful in sewage treatment and in mineral processing. Exemplified products are copolymers of acrylamide with one or more of sodium acrylate, 2-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate quaternized with dimethyl sulphate, acrylonitrile and sodium vinylsulphonate.
