    • A multimedia aircraft communication system including a portable control and display unit 100, such as a portable handheld pocket PC or PDA, for communicating data, voice and/or video communications to devices both inside and outside the aircraft. The system uses the aircraft's existing communications infrastructure (e.g. SATCOM, GPS, VHF antennas 400, 500, 600) and includes an Aircraft Communication Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS) transceiver 300 for communicating data, voice and video messages, e.g. to other aircraft and ground-based operation centres. The system includes a peripheral device on the aircraft, preferably a camera, whose movement and function can be controlled by the portable control and display unit 100, enabling the selection of images to be transmitted. The control and display unit 100 may communicate with other control and display units 100 and communication may include sensor conditions such as activation of panic button 800, door contacts and fire detection. The system is operable both when the aircraft is in flight and on the ground and, in the event of an emergency, terror attack or hijack, the system enables people both inside and outside the aircraft to be alerted and provided with relevant voice, data and video information. The portable control and display unit 100 may also function as a cell phone and can be provided to cabin crew 40 and Sky Marshals 30.

    • A multi-modal portable communications gateway for operation in an airport environment is disclosed. The multi-modal portable communications gateway may include a communication interface, a controller that controls the operation of the multi-modal portable communications gateway, a controller panel that includes a user interface to enable a user to interact with the multi-modal portable communications gateway, a WiFi antenna that enables reception and transmission of WiFi signals, a cellular antenna that enables reception and transmission of cellular signals, a power supply unit that enables power to be provided to the multi-modal portable communications gateway, wherein the controller signals the power supply unit to shut down based on one or more safety indication, a communication router that receives data from systems in the airport environment through the communication interface, and transmits the data to at least one predetermined location outside an aircraft upon receiving a signal from the controller, and one or more charging port that enables external electronic devices to be connected to the multi-modal portable communications gateway, wherein the power supply unit enables power to be provided to charge batteries of the external devices.
