摘要： Compositions and methods for disinfecting beehives and bee colonies for preventing or treating diseases in honeybees and honeybee larvae are disclosed. Such diseases arise from a variety of sources, including bacteria, fungi, viruses, protozoa and parasites in the hive. Representative diseases preventable or treatable by this invention include Foulbrood and Chalkbrood. The compositions of the present invention include a protic acid and a chlorite ion, and may further include other optional components such as a gelling agent, colorant and/or preservative. Methods disclosed herein include applying the composition to a surface of a beehive. Honey produced by bees administered a composition of this invention is also disclosed.

Typical solutions contain chlorine dioxide in isotonic saline and exhibit a pH of from about 5 to about 7.5. Sodium chlorite is employed in preferred embodiments.

摘要： Process for disinfecting a substrate. This process comprises contacting the substrate with a composition comprising a chlorine-dioxide liberating compound, such as sodium chlorite, with sufficient organic acid other than lactic acid to lower the pH of the composition to less than about 7. The organic acid has formula (I), R' and R may be the same or different and may be selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, methyl, -CH2COOH, -CH2OH, -CHOHCOOH, and -CH2C6H5. The pK of the organic acid is from about 2.8 to about 4.2. In another aspect, the present invention provides a synergistic composition for disinfecting a substrate. This composition comprises the chlorine dioxide liberating compound and organic acid discussed hereinabove as well as a vicinal polyhydroxy compound such as glycerin. In yet another aspect, there is disclosed a process for disinfecting a substrate using this synergistic composition.

摘要： Disinfecting compositions directed to the prevention of microbial infections are disclosed. The disinfecting compositions comprise a protic acid, a metal chlorite and a gelling agent which, when combined, provide an effective adherent matrix that acts as a disinfectant barrier for preventing transmission and propagation of microbial infections. The gelling agent includes at least 15 % polyacrylamide and, in other embodiments, at least 25 % polyacrylamide. The compositions of this invention may be used as teat disinfectants, specifically for use in the dairy industry, presurgical disinfectants, and as antiseptics for wounds and injection, phlebotomy and catheter insertion sites.
