    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the early initialization of transmission of data in a network interface that includes a dedicated transmit buffer in a system which includes logic for transferring frames of data composed by a host computer into the transmit buffer. SOLUTION: The amount of data of the frame which is downloaded by the host to the transmit buffer is monitored to make a threshold determination of an amount of data of the frame resident in the transmit data buffer (34). A network interface controller includes logic (36) for initiating transmission of the frame when the threshold determination indicates that a majority of the frame is resident in the transmit buffer, and prior to transfer of all of the data of the frame buffer (34) into the transmit buffer. The monitoring logic includes a storage device (43), which is programmable for storing a threshold value. Thus, the threshold value may be set by a host system to optimize performance.     • A system and method for determining a MAC layer address of a network interface on a remote device, based on an IP address associated with the same network interface on the remote device. The disclosed system identifies an internetworking device, for example a router, that is attached to the remote subnet to which the network interface of the remote device is attached. The system identifies the network interface of the router that is attached to the remote subnet, and obtains the MAC address of that network interface from an address resolution protocol (ARP) cache associated with it. The system transmits a series of request packets having an IP destination address equal to the provided IP address of the remote device, each including a time to live value, indicating a maximum number of network hops over which each particular packet may be forwarded. The time to live values of the request packets result in each successive request packet being forwarded one hop further along the path to the remote device. The internetworking devices along the route to the remote device each receive one request packet that cannot be forwarded because the time to live value has been decremented to zero. As a result, each internetworking device along the route returns a reply packet to the requesting device indicating its IP address.

    • A method of finding a mobile wireless communications device when an Internet Protocol (IP) packet from a remote user is sent to the device over an IP network. The mobile device does not have to register with the IP network in order to receive the IP. The method comprises the steps of receiving the IP packet at a home agent associated with a wireless communications network. The IP packet includes an IP address assigned to the device. If there is no current mobility binding record for the mobile device, instead of dropping the packet the home agent sends an access-request packet, containing the IP address, to an authentication server. The authentication server, e.g., a RADIUS server, maintains a table mapping the IP address for the device to an identification number uniquely associated with the device, such as the device's International Mobile Subscriber Identity number. The authentication server sends an access-accept packet to the home agent in the event that the device is authorized to receive the IP packet, in which case the access-accept packet includes the identification information. The home agent uses the identification number to locate, page and automatically connect the wireless device to the IP network via an InterWorking Unit (IWU) configured as a IP network access server.
