    • Methods and apparatus for providing unified access to interactive media applications and services in a network. In one embodiment, the network comprises a content-based network such as a cable television or satellite network, and the applications are disposed at the network headend. A servlet is provided to facilitate communication between the applications and client devices. The servlet acts as a proxy for applications utilizing a different content format than the client devices. The applications obtain data from e.g., an internet host server via a gateway device. The client application(s) may comprise Enhanced TV Binary Interchange Format (EBIF) pages, and are configured so as to permit use via a common interface (e.g., the user's set top box and television display). These client applications enable a user to, for example, search the internet for data relating to displayed content, post and navigate micro-blogs, instant messaging or SMS, making telephone calls (e.g., VoIP), address/contact management, or provide the user with additional information about a product or service. An application providing internet content to the client device is also provided.

    • Methods and apparatus for supporting targeted advertising and/or other targeted applications in set top boxes which use data and/or applications, e.g., EBIF (Enhanced TV Binary Interchange Format) applications, are described. Application level targeting is supported in which an application running on different STBs presents different application behavior and/or presents different visual sub-elements depending on the content of a subscriber profile on the particular individual STB. In the case of addressability at the Application Layer an EBIF application can target different viewers by checking private User Preference Items at runtime. Addressability at the signaling/platform level is also supported allowing targeting of a specific application or a sub-element within an application to a specific target group. In this scenario the particular applications/sub-elements are loaded on the set-tops that belong to a target group, e.g., satisfy targeting constraints specified in private targeting metadata that is received in an MPEG stream.

    • Methods and apparatus for supplying unbound applications with data via in-band program channel signaling are described. Unbound applications are STB or other customer premise device applications which continue to run when a tuner in the device changes between program channels. Applications executed in a STB, in accordance with the present invention, e.g., eBIF applications, continue to run despite changes in program channels with data being supplied via in-band signaling, out of band signaling, or a combination of in-band and out of band signaling. The methods and apparatus are well suited for supporting delivery of program catalog information relevant to an individual program channel using in-band signaling reducing or eliminating the need to delivery a multi-channel program catalog via out of band signaling to support various VOD applications.

    • Disclosed is a PTZ video visibility detection method based on luminance characteristic, which includes acquiring a road condition video image by utilizing a PTZ video camera, extracting the region of interest ROI of the road surface to obtain high constancy of selected pixels; acquiring precise road surface region by utilizing region-growing algorism based on Nagao filtering to ensure the illuminance constancy of the selected pixels in world coordinates; in the road surface region, extracting the contrast curve which reflects the luminance variation of the road surface, and searching the feature points of the luminance curve to calculate the human eye distinguishable and maximum far pixels in the image with an extinction coefficient; calculating the maximum visibility distance in combination with camera calibration to determine the visibility value. The present invention can take full advantage of existing PTZ camera to video the road condition and acquire the image without the need of providing any artificial marker. Monitoring can be in real time and has a low monitoring cost, and the monitoring requirement of large area road condition can be satisfied. Monitoring is stable and can not be disturbed by environment. It is a visibility detecting method with the advantages of simpleness, easy realization, high precision and excellent use effect.
