摘要： A method for measuring a physical function forms a symmetric composite function by combining the physical function with a reference function. The method obtains a Fourier transform of the symmetric composite function. The method calculates an inverse Fourier transform of the obtained Fourier transform, wherein the calculated inverse Fourier transform provides information regarding the physical function. The physical function can be a nonlinearity profile of a sample with at least one sample surface. The physical function can alternatively by a sample temporal waveform of a sample optical pulse.

摘要： A method determines the complex scattering function of a portion of a sample under analysis. The method includes providing a magnitude spectrum of a complex spatial Fourier transform of a complex intermediate function. The complex intermediate function is dependent on the complex scattering function of the portion of the sample under analysis. The magnitude spectrum is obtained from power spectrum data of frequency-domain optical coherence tomography of the portion of the sample under analysis. The method further includes providing an estimated phase term of the complex spatial Fourier transform. The method further includes multiplying the magnitude spectrum and the estimated phase term together to generate an estimated complex spatial Fourier transform. The method further includes calculating an inverse Fourier transform of the estimated complex spatial Fourier transform. The inverse Fourier transform of the estimated complex spatial Fourier transform is a spatial function. The method further includes calculating an estimated intermediate function by applying at least one constraint to the inverse Fourier transform of the estimated complex spatial Fourier transform.

摘要： Coupling of core modes to surface modes in an air core photonic-bandgap fiber (PBF) can cause large propagation losses. Computer simulations analyze the relationship between the geometry and the presence of surface modes in PBFs having a triangular hole pattern and identify ranges of core characteristic dimensions (e.g., radii) for which the fiber supports no surface modes (i.e., only core modes are present) over the entire wavelength range of the bandgap. In particular, for a hole spacing and a hole radius = 0.47 , the core supports a single mode and supports no surface modes for core radii between about 0.7 and about 1.05 , which suggests that such fibers should exhibit a very low propagation loss. The existence of surface modes can be predicted simply and expediently by studying either the bulk modes alone or the geometry of the fiber without requiring a full analysis of the defect modes.

摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fiber optical amplifier system whose structure is highly simplified. SOLUTION: This fiber optical amplifier system is provided with a lasing fiber, a pump light source 42 with which the lasing fiber is pumped, and a light coupler having the coupling efficiency which depends on wavelength. This light coupler contains an optical fiber port for signal which transmits the signal to be amplified, an optical fiber port for pump light which transmits the pump light, and an optical fiber port for signal and pump light. This optical fiber port for signal and pump light, is optically coupled to one end of the lasing fiber. The signal to be amplified is transmitted between the above-mentioned optical coupler and the lasing fiber, and an inversion distribution is generated in a lasing substance by transmitting the pump light to the lasing substance contained in the lasing fiber. As a result, signal is amplified by induction radiation when the signal passes through the lasing fiber.

摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To inject a signal using an identical multiplication coupler by pumping a lasing material and causing an inversion distribution in a doped material so that a signal is amplified by induction radiation in passing through the doped material thereby realizing symmetrical bi-directional amplification. SOLUTION: A pumping illumination source 42 is coupled with the fiber 12a of a coupler and provides the port A of a multiplication coupler with pumping illumination. A signal to be amplified is coupled with one end of a fiber 12b at port C of the coupler. Pumping illumination from the light source 42 and the signal to be amplified are coupled at port D of the coupler through amplifying function of the coupler. The pair of signal wavelengths are delivered to an ND:YAG crystal 44 to be coupled with the fiber 12b. A signal input at port C is amplified in the ND:YAG crystal 44 and coupled with an optical fiber 46 before being transmitted through an optical fiber system.

SOLUTION: A fiber optical amplifier system has a lasing fiber 44, a pump light source 42 for pumping the lasing fiber 44, and photocouplers 10a and 10b with a coupling efficiency, depending on the wavelength. The photocouplers 10a and 10b include an optical fiber port for signal that transmits a signal to be amplified, an optical fiber port for pump light that transmits pump light, and an optical fiber port commonly for signal and pump light. The optical fiber port used commonly for the signal and pump signal is coupled optically to one terminal of the lasing fiber 44, transmits a signal to be amplified between the photocouplers 10a and 10b and the lasing fiber 44. At the same time, the port transmits pump light to a lasing substance in the lasing fiber 44 and causes an population inversion in the lasing substance, thus amplifying a signal owing to induced radiation when it passes through the lasing fiber 44.

摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make even a long waveguide stable to a slow environmental disturbance, such as a temp. change, over the length of an arbitrary wavelength by using a Sagnac switch architecture. SOLUTION: When the pulp pulses from a pump source 420 are impressed via a second wavelength division coupler 422, different phase shifts are generated in two oppositely propagating light signals. This generation occurs in the influence of the pump signal on an active fiber 416 and the asymmetric positioning of the active fiber 416. When the differential phase shifts are ±π or odd times ±π(namely, the phase shifts of ±(2n+1)π when n=0, 1, 2,...) are assumed and the two signals interfere to weaken each other at a port A of a coupler 414 and interfere to intensify each other at a port B of the coupler 414. The output fiber 450 (port 4) couples the output signals from the port B of the coupler 414 as the changed over output signals.
