    • At least an abnormal state of a filter is accurately avoided when PM collected in the filter is oxidized and removed by fuel cut processing in an internal combustion engine of a spark ignition system. The air is supplied at a usual air flow rate into the filter by stopping fuel injection in the internal combustion engine and setting the opening degree of a throttle valve to a predetermined value, and the particulate matter collected in the filter is oxidized and removed. In a case where an estimated reached temperature which is the temperature, to which a temperature of the filter is estimated to be reached, when the oxidation and removal of the particulate matter are performed at the usual air flow rate is determined to exceed a predetermined abnormality determination temperature associated with the abnormal state of the filter, the flow rate of air which actually flows into the filter when the oxidation and removal of the particulate matter are performed is reduced to a temperature-increase-suppression flow rate which is less than the usual air flow rate.
