    • A method and apparatus is presented for simultaneous reception of a plurality of digital RF channels. Specifically, N amplifier-filter circuits (111, 112, 113) are configured to receive and separate a multichannel analog RF input signal into N analog signals, each including a different frequency band. N analog-to-digital converters (121, 122, 123) are provided, each respectively coupled to one of the N amplifier-filter circuits (111, 112, 113) and configured to receive an analog signal and generate a respective digital signal. A digital tuner (130) is coupled to receive and demultiplex the N digital signals generated by the N analog-to-digital converters (121, 122, 123), thereby recovering M digital RF channels. M demodulation circuits (141, 142, 143) are provided for performing demodulation and forward-error-correction of the M digital RF channels (see FIG. 1). This combination of components permits substantially simultaneous reception of multiple digital cable channels within a single digital receiver circuit suitable for use with conventional cable delivery systems and at a reasonable cost.

    • A signal tuning system (200) including a picture-in-picture (PIP) feature (270) includes a first (215) and a second (220) tuner. The first (215) and second (220) tuners are adapted to tune to a first and a second channel of a received signal in response to a state of the received signal. A switching device (235) coupled to the tuners (215, 220) switches the tuner (215) carrying a primary channel to a primary display area (265) . The switching device (240) also switches the other tuner (220) carrying the secondary channel to a PIP display in a PIP display area (270) . One tuner is a higher performance tuner and the other a lower performance tuner. Therefore the more sensitive tuner is tuned to the weaker one of the two received channels.

    • A system for economically extending the effective operational range of an infrared remote control system having a remote control unit with an infrared transmitter, and a controlled device having an infrared receiver. The system includes a first transmitter to receive IR signals from the emote control unit and transmit an RF output signal corresponding to the infrared signal received from the remote control unit. The RF signal is received by an RF receiver which generates a second IR signal corresponding to the received radio signal. The second IR signal is transmitted to and received by the IR controlled device. In some cases, the first IR control signal, and in all cases, the RF, signal include information/data concerning the IR carrier frequency. This information/data of IR carrier frequency, instead of the RF transmission of the actual IR carrier frequency, permits a reduction of the RF bandwidth since the full frequency spectrum of possible IR carriers need not be transmitted, thus permitting amplitude shift keying (ASK) modulation to be used. The RF receiver decodes the received signal and uses the information/data to configure a second IR control signal that is compatible with and transmitted to the controlled device.
