摘要： A communication system that supports multiple modulation and channel coding schemes selects an optimum RF link by measuring link quality parameters, such as C/I ratio. All of the available RF links are characterized based on the measured link quality parameters by calculating mean values and variances of the parameters. Based on the characterization of the RF link, user quality values, such as user data throughput and speech quality values, are estimated. The communication system selects the RF link that provides the best user quality value.

摘要： A bit rate indicator for use in the mobile station of a radiotelephone system which provides an indication to the user of the maximal bit rate available in the current cell and the predicted bit rate the user can expect to achieve if a session were initiated in his present location. In calculating the maximal bit rate, the mobile station receives a message from the base station indicating the base station's capabilities, such as support for multi-slot operations and coding/modulation schemes. The mobile station then uses the base station's capabilities along with its own capabilities to determine the maximal bit rate. In calculating predicted bit rate, the mobile station measures the link quality of at least one channel and based on, at least one of, the measured link quality and mobile's capabilities, determines a predicted bit rate the user would achieve in his present location. Both the maximal and predicted bit rates can be outputted on the mobile station for comparison by the user. This information can be used to effectively direct the user to the location in a cell with the best link quality. The present invention may be especially useful when using a mobile station to interface with the Internet.

摘要： A method and apparatus are provided for minimizing overhead in packet re-transmission in a communication system. Each packet is given a sequence number, based on a current transmission rate, the size of the packet, and a previously assigned sequence number. The packet size can is adapted so that the entire packet fits into a single transmission block. The packet size may also be adapted based on throughput. The packet size may be adapted based on the transmission rate and/or throughput, whether the packet is being transmitted the first time or if it is being re-transmitted. Alternately, if the packet is being re-transmitted, the packet is transmitted at its original transmission rate, regardless of the current transmission rate.

摘要： The present invention relates to methods of controlling transmitting power in a cellular radio communication system comprising one or several base stations each communicating with mobile terminals located within its respective area of coverage in which method the desired power change is calculated by means of an adaptive algorithm. Power drift between the desired output power and actually used output power is reduced by making the algorithm reduce the influence of the previously used output power by multiplying it with a "forgetting function" lambda with values between 0 and 1. At the receiving end is a decision made whether the received power order commands are reliable or not by checking the soft value of the power order commands. This proposed power control algorithm provides a delta-modulated fast power control method which is robust to errors in the signalling channel and at the same time reacts quickly to fast fading variations.
