    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rubber composition for a tread capable of improving high mileage, wet grip performance and wear resistance in a good balance, and a pneumatic tire using the composition.SOLUTION: The rubber composition for a tread comprises a rubber component, silica, and a polyalkylene glycol having a branched structure. In 100 mass% of the rubber component, the following modified diene polymer rubber is included by 5 mass% or more: the modified diene polymer rubber is obtained by allowing triglycidyl isocyanurate to react with an active conjugate diene polymer having an alkali metal terminal which is obtained by polymerizing a conjugate diene monomer, or polymerizing a conjugate diene monomer and an aromatic vinyl monomer, by use of an alkali metal catalyst in the coexistence of a Lewis basic compound in a hydrocarbon solvent. The composition contains, with respect to 100 parts by mass of the rubber composition, 5 to 150 parts by mass of the silica, and 0.5 to 30 parts by mass of the polyalkylene glycol.
