      SOLUTION: An internal defect 5 dominantly appears as difference of surface temperature because a heat quantity of heat 3 given to an inspection object 1 larger than a heat quantity of heat 7 considerably raises the surface temperature of the inspection object 1, and a heat flow generated thereby is reflected in the internal defect 5, which raises the temperature of a surface 2 of the inspection object 1. By focusing on a temperature rising rate of the surface temperature and the difference of the surface temperature generated between a sound part and the defective part, and by quantifying these relations, an effective range for detecting defects inside the inspection object is determined, and the reliability of inspection results in the effective range is ensured.

A waveform-comparing means 16 implements a correlation process, and obtains an optimal period as a period of a reference waveform is changed based on the measurement data recorded in the data recording means 13. A depth of the internal defect is estimated, by applying a relationship between the defect depth and the period of the reference waveform to a previously recorded pattern table based on the obtained period. A comparison result outputting means 18 outputs information on the estimated internal defect.
