    • A process for preparing a cyanoarylmethylamine by hydrogenating only one of the two nitrile groups of an aromatic dinitrile, wherein the reaction of an aromatic dinitrile at an enhanced conversion is attained with a reduced amount of a catalyst at low temperature under low pressure to give the objective compound in an enhanced yield. In the above process, a Raney catalyst activated by contact with hydrogen in the presence of a solvent is used as the catalyst in preparing a cyanoarylmethylamine from an aromatic dinitrile. The activated Raney catalyst is used preferably in an amount of 0.1 to 10 wt.%, still preferably 0.5 to 5 wt.% based on the aromatic dinitrile. The above activated Raney catalyst is preferably one prepared by activating a Raney catalyst containing nickel and/or cobalt in a solvent under a hydrogen atmosphere.
