    • A packaging machine includes a clamping arrangement, composed of a series of clamps designed to grip and release a web of flexible material, and which are coupled to a belt that is advanced along a predetermined path to advance the web of flexible through the machine. The belt is made up of side-by-side belt portions that are spliced together in axially spaced locations by the clamps, to withstand the forces and stresses placed thereon as the web material is advanced. Each clamp is formed of an upper jaw member and a lower jaw member that are pivotably interconnected together, in combination with a guide member the guides movement of the belt through the machine. The belts are independently driven by operation of a pair of motors, which are synchronously operated in order to advance the opposite edges of the web material at the same rate of speed through the machine.

    • A system for packaging of perishable food products involves initially packaging the food product in a receptacle containing an inert gas atmosphere and sealing a film to the receptacle. The inert gas atmosphere prevents deterioration of the food product subsequent to shipment from a central processing facility. The receptacle includes a sealing flange and a tab portion extending from the sealing flange, to which the film is sealed. To prepare the food product for display at a retail establishment, the tab and the film sealed thereto are removed from the package, to form an opening between the film and the receptacle. An atmosphere exchange operation is carried out through the opening, by inserting a nozzle through the opening and introducing an oxygen-containing gas into the receptacle cavity through the opening. The inert gas atmosphere initially contained within the receptacle is exhausted through the opening. Once the atmosphere exchange process has been carried out, the nozzle is withdrawn from the opening and the opening is closed by sealing the film to the receptacle. Introduction of the oxygen-containing gas into the receptacle cavity induces the desired oxygen "bloom" in a fresh meat food product, and in other food products replaces the inert gas atmosphere in preparation for display and consumption of the food product. The final configuration of the package as displayed to consumers has the same external appearance as prior art packages, leading to ready consumer acceptance while greatly enhancing product life and reducing spoilage associated with production and distribution of the food products from a central processing facility. The invention also contemplates a package and a receptacle construction for use in carrying out the described method.

    • A dual actuator cylinder assembly includes a cylinder body defining first and second axially aligned and separated internal cavities, which extend along aligned longitudinal axes. A first piston is movably mounted in the first internal cavity for movement along the longitudinal axis of the first internal cavity, and a second piston is movably mounted in the second internal cavity for movement along the longitudinal axis of the second internal cavity. A first actuator rod has an inner end interconnected with the first piston and an outer end located exteriorly of the cylinder body, and a second actuator rod has an inner end interconnected with the second piston and an outer end located exteriorly of the cylinder body. Movement of the first piston within the first internal cavity and movement of the second piston within the second internal cavity causes movement of the first and second actuator rods, respectively, in an axial direction along the longitudinal axes of the first and second internal cavities. The cylinder assembly may be incorporated in a vacuum packaging head that includes a seal member and a knife member. The outer end of the first actuator rod is interconnected with the seal member for moving the seal member between an operative sealing position and a retracted position, and the outer end of the second actuator rod is interconnected with the knife member for moving the knife member between an operative extended position and an inoperative retracted position.

    • A valve arrangement for a vacuum pump assembly selectively opens and closes communication between a vacuum pump, evacuation vessel, and a volume to be evacuated. The valve arrangement allows the evacuation vessel and any conduit connecting the vacuum pump and evacuation vessel to the volume to first be evacuated without providing a vacuum to the volume. The valve arrangement also allows the volume to be connected to the evacuation vessel but cut-off from the vacuum pump so that at initial stages of the evacuation process for the volume dead air contained within the volume may be communicated to the evacuation vessel rather than drawn out by the vacuum pump.     • A support for rotatably mounting a roll of web material includes a braking and roll position adjustment mechanism. The support is in the form of a series of support rods extending between a pair of end plates, which engage the internal walls of the roll core at spaced locations. The braking mechanism consists of a brake shaft which extends through the roll core, and which bears against the roll core during its rotation to apply resistance as the web is being unwound from the roll. The brake shaft can selectively be moved to a disengaged position in which it is moved out of engagement with the core. The roll position adjustment mechanism includes a rotatable shaft which extends through the roll core, and to which the brake shaft is pivotably mounted via a pair of arms. One of the arms is threadedly engaged with external threads provided on the rotatable shaft, and a pair of collars are engaged with the brake shaft such that one collar is located immediately adjacent each end of the roll core. Turning of the rotatable shaft results in longitudinal movement of the brake shaft in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of the roll core, which results in longitudinal movement of the roll via engagement of the collars with the ends of the roll core.
