    • The invention describes a novel single step process for the production of carbinol bases of the formula I ##STR1## wherein R is the methyl or ethyl group, each R.sub.3 independently is a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group and the benzene rings A and/or B can be unsubstituted or substituted, which process comprises alkylating 1 mole of a dye base of the formula II ##STR2## or the hydrogen salt thereof of the formula IIa ##STR3## wherein R.sub.3, A and B are as defined for formula I and X is any anion, in aqueous alkaline medium having a pH value of at least 10, with at least 2 moles of a compound that introduces the radical R. The carbinol bases obtained are valuable intermediates for obtaining in particular cationic compounds containing any anions, especially carboxylic acid anions, most preferably an acetate anion.

    • Disclosed is a device for transporting an original to be copied while resting on a supporting surface, preferably a drum, in a reproduction apparatus, comprising: a shaft extending across the width of the supporting surface and being arranged in spaced relationship substantially parallel therewith; a plurality of means in spaced attachment along the shaft and responsive to rotation of the shaft for clamping the leading edge of the original; a flexible strip member commonly covering the clamping means and being adapted to protect the leading edge of the original in the clamped position; means engaging one end of the shaft in an original-receiving position for opening and closing the clamping means by rotating the shaft; and means engaging one end of the shaft in an original-releasing position for opening the clamping means by rotating the shaft.

    • Process for the manufacture of a heterocyclic compound of the formula I ##STR1## in which Y denotes a --CN, --COOR' or ##STR2## group, in which R' can be an optionally substituted alkyl or aryl radical and R" and R"' independently of one another can have the same meaning as R' or can be hydrogen or, conjointly with the nitrogen atom, can form a heterocyclic 5-membered or 6-membered ring and X denotes a --S-- or --O-- atom or a --NR"-- group and the ring A can carry non-ionic substituents or optionally substituted fused rings, wherein a nitrile of the formula IInc -- ch.sub.2 -- y (ii)is reacted, in organic solvents, with a lower alcohol of the formula IIIr -- oh (iii)using a molar ratio of nitrile to alcohol of 1:0.9 to 1:1.2, in the presence of an anhydrous strong acid at temperatures of -10.degree. to +40.degree. C to give an imino-ether salt of the formula IV ##STR3## and the resulting imino-ether salt is subjected, without intermediate isolation thereof, to a condensation reaction with an aromatic amine of the formula V ##STR4## using a molar ratio of nitrile to amine of the formula V of 1:0.8 to 1:1.2, at temperatures of 0.degree. to 120.degree. C to give compounds of the formula I, and in the formulae II to V, A, Y and X have the meaning indicated under formula I, R denotes a lower alkyl radical and Z.sup.- denotes an anion of a strong acid.
