    • A method and apparatus are provided for determining a priming status of a pumping system. The pumping system includes a water pump and a variable speed motor. The method includes the steps of determining a reference power consumption of the motor, determining an actual power consumption of the motor, comparing the reference and actual power consumptions, and determining a priming status of the pumping system based upon the comparison. In addition or alternatively, the method includes operating the motor at a motor speed and altering control of the motor based upon the priming status. In addition or alternatively, the pumping system includes means for determining a reference power consumption of the motor, means for determining an actual power consumption of the motor, means for determining a priming status of the pumping system, and means for altering control of the motor based upon the priming status.

    • SPEED CONTROL A pumping system (10) for at least one aquatic application (14) controlled by a user, the pumping system (10) comprising: a pump (16); a variable speed motor (24) coupled to the pump (16); a memory storing a first speed value and a second speed value; a user interface (31) including a first speed button (e.g., 41a) to select the first speed value and a second speed button (e.g., 41b) to select the second speed value, the user interface (31) including an increase button (45a) and a decrease button (45b) for altering one of the first speed value and the second speed value; the increase button (45a) and the decrease button (45b) being capable of an actuate and release operation to alter one of the first speed value and the second speed value; the increase button (45a) and the decrease button (45b) being capable of a first touch and hold operation to alter one of the first speed value and the second speed value; the first speed button (41 a) and the second speed button (41 b) capable of a second touch and hold operation to store in the memory a new speed value that replaces one of the first speed value and the second speed value; the user selecting at least one of the first speed button (41a), the second speed button (41b), the increase button (45a), and the decrease button (45b) to specify a current speed value; the user interface (31) displaying the current speed value to the user as the user alters the current speed value; and a controller in communication with the variable speed motor (24), the memory, and the user interface (31), the controller obtaining one of the first speed value and the second speed value from the memory and operating the variable speed motor (24) at a substantially constant speed based on the current speed value.
