    • In a new process for the prodn. of arylsulphony isocyanate derivs. of formula Ar-SO2-NM-Y (I), an N-halo-arylsulphonamidate of formula Ar-SO2-NH-CX=O (II) is reacted with carbon monoxide and ( simultaneously or subsequently) with an alcohol or thiol of formula HZR (III) or with carbon monoxide and an amine of formula HNR2R3 (IV) in a solvent at -20 to -130 deg.C under a carbon monoxide atmosphere with an initial pressure of 0.3-10 MPa for 0.5-24 hrs and subsequently working up the reaction mixture in a conventional manner, the reactions being carried out (A) in the presence of 0.01-10 wt.% (based on II) of a carbonylation catalyst which is a homogeneous, heterogeneous or immobilised homogeneous palladium complex (added to the reaction mixture or formed insditu in situ) in which the coordinative binding is through carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, sulphur and/or halogen atoms or a palladium complex with a group VII metal and (B) in the optional presence of 0.1-10 wt.% (based on (II)) of a phase-transfer catalyst: (where Ar is phenyl, naphtyl or thienyl op. substd. by 1-4C alkyl, 1-4C alkyl, 1-4C haloalkyl, haloalkoxy, NO2, CN or halogen; X is a residue -ZR1 or -NR2R3 or together with H forms a direct bond; Z is O or S; R1 is 1-8C alkyl, allyl, propargyl, 1-4C haloalkyl, cyclohexyl, benzyl or op. substd. phenyl; R2 and R3 are H, 1-4C alkyl, allyl, cyclohexyl, alkoxycarbonyl, arylsulphonyl, 2-4C acyl or opt. substd. benzoyl (R2 and R3 not both being H) or R2+R3 is a 4-6C alpha, omega-alkylene chain which may be interrupted by oxygen; Y is Cl or Br; and M is Na, K, or a quaternary ammonium or quaternary phosphonium ion).
