    • A guide (34a) for seat belt webbing (16) in a vehicle (14) includes a support member (50) that includes an elongated slot (88) through which the seat belt webbing (16) extends. A curved surface (90) defines a portion of the elongated slot (88). The guide (34a) also includes an insert (110) that is adapted to be received in the elongated slot (88) of the support member (50) and that includes a webbing guide portion (112) for guiding the seat belt webbing (16) through the elongated slot (88). The webbing guide portion (112), during normal operating conditions, is spaced apart from the curved surface (90) of the support member (50). The webbing guide portion (112) of the insert (110), when subjected to a load from the seat belt webbing (16) that exceeds a predetermined amount, moves into engagement with and conforms to the curved surface (90) of the support member (50).

    • A vehicle occupant protection device (10) for helping to protect an occupant of a seat of a vehicle includes an inertia member (66) that engages an element (54). The inertia member (66) is movable relative to the element (54) from an unactuated position to an actuated position in response to at least one sensed vehicle condition for activating the occupant protection device (10). A vertical axis (83) extends through the center of mass of the inertia member (66) when the inertia member (66) is in the unactuated position. At least one of the element (54) and the inertia member (66) has at least one planar surface (80) that extends at an angle relative to the vertical axis (54). The inertia member (66) and element (54) are movable relative to one another along the at least one planar surface (80) to place the inertia member (66) in the actuated position to activate the occupant protection device.

    • A seat belt retractor (10) has a rotatable spool (50) on which seat belt webbing (16) is wound. Rotation of the spool (50) results in rotation of an actuator gear (170) which drives an actuator ring (200). The actuator gear (170) and actuator ring (200) control movement of a cinch lever (130) to an actuated position to move a lock pawl (100) into engagement with a ratchet wheel (90) to block rotation of the spool (50) in a belt withdrawal direction (58). When all the belt webbing (16) is wound on the spool (50), a blocking member (230) on the actuator ring (200) moves the cinch lever (130) against a vehicle deceleration sensor lever (118) to minimize rattling of the sensor lever and of an inertia mass (112). A projection (216) on the actuator ring (200) ensures proper movement of the cinch lever (130) from the actuator ring (200) onto a cam surface (194) of the actuator gear (170). A spring (182) on the actuator gear (170) allows the actuator gear to assume a correctly timed rotational position when the belt webbing (16) is fully withdrawn from the spool (50).
