    • A room divider (100) for dividing a room into two sub-portions (R1, R2) and for attenuating sound (S1, S2) travelling between the two sub-portions is provided. The room divider comprises hollow cylindrical elements (110) arranged periodically for dividing the room into the two sub-portions. At least some of the hollow cylindrical elements have a cylindrical shell (111) with at least one slit (112) extending in an axial direction (120) of the shell. The shell extends continuously along the perimeter of the corresponding hollow cylindrical element from one side (113) of the at least one slit to another side (114) of the at least one slit. Each of the at least one slit faces in a local elongation direction (130) of the room divider for increasing acoustic symmetry with respect to the two sub-portions. The use of destructive interference and resonance to attenuate sound allows for a less bulky/heavy acoustically absorbing room divider.

A corresponding system (3000) includes one or two such apparatuses (3100, 3200). A method of detecting the presence of a substance on a surface includes probing an interaction zone (17) for at least partial obstruction of flow of the fluid (30) through the distal probe tip (112, 112'). The distal probe tip (112, 112') may have a structural configuration for preventing blocking of the open port (136, 2604). The distal probe tip (112, 112') may also have a non-uniform wear profile. The at least one distal probe portion (110) may include two or multiple components to improve performance and reliability.

    • An apparatus for detecting the presence of a substance on a surface includes a proximal pump portion and at least one distal probe portion configured to be immersed in a first fluid. The proximal pump portion and the distal probe portion are in fluid communication with one another. The distal probe portion defines a distal tip having an open port to enable the passage of a second fluid therethrough. The apparatus is configured such that passage of the second fluid through the distal tip enables detection of a substance that may be present on the surface based on measurement of a signal correlating to, in proximity to the surface, one or more bubbles generated by the second fluid in the first fluid. A corresponding method of detection includes probing the properties of an interaction zone via outflow of the second fluid medium from the surface.
