    • The invention provides a non-invasive treatment device (100) for heating a first (15) and a second (25) inner region of skin using r.f. electrical current, comprising: a first r.f. treatment electrode (10) configured and arranged to allow r.f. current to pass through the first inner region (15) to a return electrode (340), a second r.f. treatment electrode (20) configured and arranged to allow r.f. current to pass through the second inner region (25) to the return electrode (340), the device further being arranged such that the smallest distance between the first r.f. treatment electrode (10) and the return electrode (340) is less than the smallest distance between the second r.f. treatment electrode (20) and the return electrode (340); wherein the electrical skin contact area of the return electrode (340) is 5 or more times larger than the electrical skin contact area of the first r.f. treatment electrode (10), and the electrical skin contact area of the second r.f. treatment electrode (20) is 5 or more times larger than the electrical skin contact area of the first r.f. treatment electrode (10). By incorporating the second and first treatment electrodes in the same device, or probe, the positional relationship between the first and second regions being heated is fixed, or at least more predictable. By means of a suitable configuration, the regions may coincide to a smaller or greater degree. In some cases, the configuration may allow the same skin condition to be treated using heating of the first and second inner regions without moving the device over the skin. By providing an electrical skin contact area of the return electrode which is 5 or more times larger than the electrical skin contact area of the first r.f. treatment electrode, the locations heated by the r.f. electrical current will be proximate to the first treatment electrode, reducing the possibility of undesirable hotspots proximate the return electrode (340).

    • The invention relates generally to the treatment of skin using laser light, and more particularly to a non-invasive device and method for such treatment. During skin treatments, heating of the epidermis is undesired because it may cause discomfort for the person being treated, adverse skin reactions and unwanted changes in skin pigment. The invention provides a laser treatment beam having a first 22a and a second 22b beam region of non-zero light intensity disposed at a periphery of a transverse cross-section of the beam, and a third beam region 22c, arranged between the first 22a and the second 22b beam region, of lower light intensity than said non-zero light intensity. The treatment beam 22 exits the device 10 along its optical treatment axis 13. As the treatment beam 22 passes through an outer layer of the skin to the focal spot 25 along the optical treatment axis (13), the extent of the third beam region 22c is predetermined and/or controlled so as to provide a corresponding third skin region 23c in the outer skin layer16, arranged between the first 23a and the second skin region 23b, and the lower light intensity of the third beam region is predetermined and/or controlled to provide a maximum temperature during a pulse of the laser treatment beam with in the third skin region 23c which is lower than the maximum temperatures during said pulse of the laser treatment beam within the first 23a and the second 23b skin region. The light source 20 is configured and arranged to provide, in use, a pulse duration of the pulse of the laser treatment beam which is longer than the thermal relaxation time of the first 23a and the second 23b skin region. By predetermining and/or controlling the dimensions of the third skin region 23c, a suitably dimensioned heat sink is created, centrally located within the region being heated by the laser treatment beam, and used to avoid temperature hot spots in the outer layers of the skin.

    • The present application relates to an aqueous composition comprising at least one active cosmetic ingredient and a tracking substance suitable to allow the release of the active cosmetic ingredient to be monitored, an energy-triggered system comprising such a composition for topically delivering at least one active cosmetic ingredient to the skin as well as a method for topically delivering an active cosmetic ingredient to skin. The aqueous cosmetic composition comprises a temperature sensitive liposome encapsulating at least one active cosmetic ingredient; the temperature sensitive liposome melts when thermal energy is applied to it; thereby providing a stable cosmetic composition and allowing the user to release the active cosmetic ingredient at any required time and/or location. The energy- triggered system also comprises a thermal energy source providing thermal energy to melt the liposome and release the active ingredient. The thermal energy source may be part of a device (1) having a thermal energy source (3) that applies energy (7) to an aqueous cosmetic composition (4) applied to the skin (2). The thermal energy melts the temperature sensitive liposome (5) and releases the active ingredient (6).
