    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent light leakage on the periphery of a display window and the peeling of a substrate at a sealing part and to make the device excellent in display quality and reliability by constituting a black matrix so that it may cover over an area between a display area and sealing material, it may be partially overlapped on the outside of the sealing material and it may cover over an area between the sealing material and the end of a 2nd substrate. SOLUTION: The black matrix BM is partially overlapped on the inside of the sealing material SL and covers over the area between the display area AR and the material SL. Then, it is partially overlapped on the outside of the material SL and y covers over the area between the material SL and the end of an upper transparent glass substrate SUB2. By arranging the black matrix BM at the end of the color filter substrate SUB2 on the outside of the material SL, light from a backlight BL is absorbed by the black matrix BM provided at the end of the substratae SUB2 and trouble that the light is seen on the periphery of the display window WD is eliminated, so that the liquid crystal display device excellent in the display quality is obtained.

    • PURPOSE:To produce a color liquid crystal display element with high yield in a state where the rate of a color display area as compared with the outside dimension is high by disposing a part protruded in a bank-state from the surface of a substrate by using the same material as a color filter film along the sealing part of upper and lower glass substrates inside the sealing part. CONSTITUTION:A black matrix film BM is provided on the upper transparent glass substrate SUB2, and color filters FIL(R), FIL(G), and FIL(B), and a dummy color filter FIL(D) are formed on the black matrix film BM. The part FIL(D) protruded in the bank-state from the surface of the substrate at almost the same height as that of the color filter film is formed by using the same material as the color filter films FIL(R), FIL(G), and FIL(B) at a position separated by a specified short distance from the color filter film along the sealing part of the upper and lower glass substrates SUB1 and SUB2 inside the sealing part. Therefore, sealing material SL is prevented from flowing into a display area where the color filter is formed by the bank-state projection part.

    • PURPOSE:To suppress the degradation in display quality, to improve pattern accuracy and to obtain distinct contours of picture elements by embedding black org. materials into the recessed parts of the colorless transparent film provided on a transparent substrate, thereby forming a black matrix. CONSTITUTION:Two sheets of the transparent substrates SUBs 1, 2 are superposed on each other apart a prescribed spacing in such a manner that the respective surfaces provided with transparent pixel electrodes ITO(indium tin oxide) 1, 2 face each other. A liquid crystal LC is sealed therebetween. The black matrix BM is formed by embedding the org. materials added with black pigments, etc., into the recessed parts which are formed by patterning on the upper transparent substrate SUB 2 and where the colorless transparent film PT does not exist. Then, the i type semiconductor layers AS of the thin-film transistors formed on the lower transparent substrate SUB 1 are held by the black matrix BM and gate electrodes GT and are no longer irradiated with external light, etc. The black matrix BM is formed to a grid form and since the effective display region of one picture element is partitioned by this grid, the distinct contours of the respective picture elements are obtd. and the contrast is improved.

    • PURPOSE:To provide a liquid crystal display which is restrained from developing a conductive phenomenon due to light illumination and lowering display quality and applied to an OHP using strong light. CONSTITUTION:The first transparent substrate SUB 1 which is provided with a thin film transistor (TFT) and a transparent picture element electrode ITO 1 and the second transparent substrate SUB 2 which is provided with a black matrix BM and a common transparent picture element electrode IT02 are in piles with the transparent picture element electrodes ITO1, IT02 opposite to each other, a liquid crystal display element which is formed by sealing liquid crystals LC is placed between both substrates SUB 1, SUB 2, and back light BL is arranged on the side of the second transparent substrate SUB 2. As light is restrained from applying to a semiconductor layer which serves as a channel area of the thin film transistor TFT, a problem of OFF property deterioration can be solved. Also, as a problem that external light is reflected from the black matrix BM on the display screen side to cause a screen to be hardly seen can be solved, display quality is improved to provide effectiveness especially for an OHP.

    • PURPOSE:To make a display screen bright and to improve display quality by connecting a grid-shaped opaque conductive film with a transparent conductive film. CONSTITUTION:The grid-shaped opaque conductive film is connected with the transparent conductive film. Namely, a gate electrode GT is formed to be larger than a semiconductor layer AS so as to completely cover the layer AS (in the case of looking from below). Therefore, when a backlight BL such as a fluorescent lamp, etc., is attached below a substrate SUB1, the light of the backlight is not cast to the semiconductor layer As because the opaque Cr gate electrode GT stands in the light. Then, a conductive phenomenon by photoirradiation, that is, the off-characteristic deterioration of a thin film transistor(TFT) hardly occurs. Even when the thickness of the transparent conductive film is thin, the substantial resistance of the transparent conductive film is made small. Thus, the light transmissivity of a common transparent picture element electrode is improved, the display screen is made bright and the display quality is made excellent.
