    • A transmission on a forage harvester permits the gathering chains, sickle, and feed rolls thereof to be selectively shifted into forward, neutral, or reverse drive conditions without affecting the operation of the power source, chopper, and blower of the harvester. Components of the transmission are operably coupled in such a manner that the rotative speeds of the feed rolls may be varied relative to the chopper without correspondingly varying the speeds of operation of the sickle and gathering chains, and rockable shifter mechanism journaling the input shaft of the transmission is geometrically arranged such that the transmission tends to remain in its forward drive condition.

    • In the drying of hay, the stems only of the crop are conditioned, during cutting and before the cut crop is returned to the ground, by a flailing action which produces multiple transverse fractures along all of the stems as they are continuously blown and forcibly projected butt first in a wide, uniform, thin stream into a windrowing assembly. A single rotor with stem-fracturing hammers or blades not only conditions the stems while they are in movement, with sufficient severity to assure complete moisture release in accordance with stem coarseness and density of growth, all without undue loss of stem stiffness, leaf knock off or clipping, but also performs the function of creating air currents that provide the additional forces needed to properly propel the cut crop and produce a loose, fluffy, faster curing windrow.

    • A header support frame, universally adapted for use with groundworking and crop-handling headers of various kinds and configurations, has a rearwardly opening, generally U-shaped main section supported above its ground-engaging wheels by virtue of a pair of rearwardly and inwardly inclined struts at the rearmost ends of each side beam of the section.     • A row crop forage harvester has three, inclined pairs of pronged gathering chains on a header attachment for rearward conveyance of stalks that are severed by a transverse cutter at the lower front end of the header. The stalks are delivered rearwardly by the chains at their upper, rear ends butt first directly between a pair of transverse rolls that compress and feed the stalks into a transverse rotatable reel-type chopper cooperating with a shear bar. The severed butt ends of the stalks slide upwardly along ramps parallel to and disposed beneath the chains. All of the chains and their ramps terminate at their upper ends within substantially the same vertical plane immediately ahead of the rolls. At their discharge ends a pair of medial chains are driven by and overlap adjacent chains, the latter of which diverge toward the cutter.

    • A swingable over-the-top tongue is provided for a windrower having a main frame positioned rearwardly of its crop cutting header. The forwardly extending tongue is upwardly arched for clearing the header above which it is disposed and is provided with a hitch at its forward end for attachment to a towing vehicle such as a tractor. The tongue is pivotally coupled to the frame for lateral swinging movement from a field-operating position to a roading position in which the tractor and the windrower are in essentially a straight-line relationship to one another presenting a minimal overall width. The tongue is further constructed in a manner to provide a fluid reservoir for hydraulically powered portions of the windrower.
