    • An audio signal (X) is represented by a bitstream (B) segmented into frames. An audio processing system (500) comprises a buffer (510) and a decoding section (520). The buffer joins sets of audio data (D 1 ; D 2 ,..., D N ) carried by N respective frames (F 1 , F 2 ,..., F N ) into one decodable set of audio data (D) corresponding to a first frame rate and to a first number of samples of the audio signal per frame. The frames have a second frame rate corresponding to a second number of samples of the audio signal per frame. The first number of samples is N times the second number of samples. The decoding section decodes the decodable set of audio data into a segment of the audio signal by at least employing signal synthesis, based on the decodable set of audio data, with a stride corresponding to the first number of samples of the audio signal.

    • There are provided decoding and encoding methods for encoding and decoding of multichannel audio content for playback on a speaker configuration with N channels. The decoding method comprises decoding, in a first decoding module, M input audio signals into M mid signals which are suitable for playback on a speaker configuration with M channels; and for each of the N channels in excess of M channels, receiving an additional input audio signal corresponding to one of the M mid signals and decoding the input audio signal and its corresponding mid signal so as to generate a stereo signal including a first and a second audio signal which are suitable for playback on two of the N channels of the speaker configuration.

    • An audio decoding system (100) for processing a two-channel input signal (X) comprises a parametric mixing stage (110). The parametric mixing stage receives the two-channel input signal and a set of mixing parameters (P1), and outputs a two-channel output signal (Y1). The parametric mixing stage comprises a decorrelation stage (111) outputting a decorrelated signal (D1) based on the input signal. The parametric mixing stage further comprises a mixing matrix (112) receiving the input signal and the decorrelated signal, and forming a two-channel linear combination of channels from the input signal and the decorrelated signal. The mixing matrix outputs the linear combination as the two-channel output signal. Coefficients of the linear combination are controllable by the set of mixing parameters, and at least four mixing parameters of the set are independently assignable. In example embodiments, multiple parametric mixing stages are used to independently reconstruct additional channels encoded in the input signal.

    • An encoding system (100) encodes a first (E1) and further (E2, E3) audio signals as a layered bitstream (B), wherein a quantizer for each frequency band of each signal is selected using a rate allocation rule based on signal-specific rate allocation data, a spectral envelope of the signal and a reference level (EnvE1Max), which is determined based on the spectral envelope of the first signal and is not necessarily included in the bitstream. Further disclosed is a decoding system for reconstructing the audio signals based on the bitstream. In embodiments, the bitstream has a basic layer (B E1 ), which contains data that enable decoding of the first audio signal, and a spatial layer (B spatial ) facilitating decoding of the further audio signal(s). In embodiments, the encoding system prepares the bitstream subject to a basic-layer bitrate constraint and a total bitrate constraint.
