    • A fuel injector includes first and second check valve members that open and close first and second nozzle outlet sets, respectively, to inject two fuels that differ in at least one of chemical identity, pressure and molecular state. The first check valve member defines a through passage, includes a closing hydraulic surface exposed to fluid pressure in the first control chamber, and moves into and out of contact with a first seat on an injector body. The second check valve member includes a closing hydraulic surface exposed to fluid pressure in a second control chamber, and moves into and out of contact with a second seat located on the first check valve member. A control valve member is movable between first and second positions that respectively block and allow fluid communication between the first and second control chambers and a drain outlet.

    • An electronically controlled fuel injector includes a reduced part count and complexity over similar fuel injectors without a substantial reduction in performance capabilities. This is accomplished by using a one-piece needle that is hydraulically balanced and biased toward a closed position with a spring positioned in the needle control chamber. Although subtle, this injector has some ability to control the fuel pressure when the needle valve is opening and closing by adjusting a relative timing of a pressure control valve opening relative to a needle control chamber, using separate electrical actuators. The invention is particularly applicable to fuel injectors that cycle through high and low pressure states during and between injection events, respectively. Cam actuated fuel injectors being particularly well suited.

    • A common rail single fluid fuel injection system includes fuel injectors with a single electrical actuator but the ability to produce ramp, square and split injection rate shapes. This is accomplished by including a control valve member that is operably coupled to the electrical actuator and is movable between a high pressure seat and a low pressure seat. A fuel supply passage is opened to a nozzle passage by moving an admission valve member from a closed position to an open position by relieving fuel pressure on a control surface via movement of the control valve member. In addition, a needle valve member is movable from a closed position to an open position by relieving pressure on a closing hydraulic surface associated with the needle valve, which is again accomplished via movement of the control valve member via the electrical actuator.
