    • 18,185. Dean, J. Aug. 11. Mechanical stoking; grates.-A mechanical stoker is used in combination with a mechanically-operated grate comprising sliding and rocking grate bars in connexion with a steamgenerator. The stoker and grate are driven from a common shaft D which carries a pinion D gearing with a wheel D carrying a pinion D . The pinion D transmits motion to gearwheels D and D , the wheel D being mounted on a shaft carrying an arm B which operates the sliding member B for transferring fuel from the hopper to the fire. The gear-wheel D is mounted on a shaft carrying an arm C adapted to engage with stops C and C' on the sliding frame C carrying the transverse rocking bars C . The frame thus receives a reciprocating motion. The shaft also carries cams C , C6, and C , the cams C and C engaging stops C and C on the frame C to move it forward with the frame C, and the cam C engaging with a stop C on the frame C to hold it while the frame C travels further forward, so causing the bars C , the bases of which are held by the frame C , to rock. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 21,966/09.

    • 6486. Dean, J. March 18. Circulating or passing fluids through materials; circulating or passing materials through vats and the like.-Vats for dyeing &c., particularly those in which material in rope or open form is placed in and travelled through the contained liquid by drums or rollers, carried above or at the side, are constructed with a steam-injector to heat, and means for maintaining a good circulation of, the liquid, the usual steam-pipe being practically omitted. The vat A is formed with two intersecting channels, one A covered by a perforated guide G, which crosses the bottom horizontally, and the other B starting at the bottom at one side, crossing the bottom at rightangles to the first and continuing up the opposite curved side, preferably gradually onlarging to the outlet C. Into this channel projects a steam-injector D, of which the nozzle D reaches, preferably, to the centre of the first channel A or just beyond. The steam forces the liquor up through the side passage B, the circulation being maintained through the perforations of the grid G. These perforations have their pitch increased as they near the side channel B, the central portion having none; or the area of the perforations may decrease towards the centre. With long vats there may be more than one side passage B with its injector D.
